Hi Jane,

Just from my own personal experience, I've got pierced earlobes and at all 3 practices I have worked, I have never had any comments about them. I do always only wear studs at work for obvious reasons! I also have a tattoo but it is out of view, but I have never been advised that this is unacceptable. I have worked with nurses that have had tattoos on their wrists and they haven't had any problems either. I did have a stint of 6 months with lilac and then bright purple/pink hair, but I only ever got positive comments from both my superiors and clients. I think some practices remain old fashioned but a lot now embrace the "it's not what you look like, but how you act" philosophy. Hope this helps!

My contract states no visible piercings or tattoos, however I was employed with both of these things and they have never bee mentioned, I have never been asked to take them out. I would remove them obviously, but it's nice not to have to. It also stipulated that hair was to be natural and tied back. So I guess that it can be necessary at some practices. Unfortunately some people judge a persons capability to do their job based on their appearance.

I don't know if it will help you or not? - I know you are through the interview but when I was involved in interviewing to get down to a short list the senior partners at one place had the no visible tatts,no facial piercings, no extreme hairstyles or unusual colours rules, even shoes had to be black lace ups - yes it was strict but the partners reasoning was if people didn't want to fit in over their requirements re appearance at that stage there was a good chance there were be other things they wouldn't see eye to eye over too. Usually when people had been there a little while and settled in things became just a little more relaxed - with the exception of tatts - they were never accepted

I've had things in past contracts about hairstyles but nothing regarding colour. Mine has been many colours in the past and usuallly several colours at once and haven't had boses say anything. In fact, a mentioned above, it's usually a talking point - I have lots of older ladies commenting on my hair and I always wonder if it's because when they were younger it wasn't as normal as it is now.

That's interesting. I've never really had a negative reaction to mine until now. Like you said Lisa, it's always been a talking point. Stumped about what I'm going to do but I'm sure I'll think of something!

I would say virtually everywhere I have worked has had a preference for natural hair colours - cant remember exactly how it was worded in contract but yes I have seen it mentioned, also visible tatts and piercings dont go down to well at some places

It's always checking on practice policy in relation to this, I am constantly changing mine at present it is electric blue, 2 weeks ago it was magenta pink. I'm lucky this is a talking point for clients and staff a like but not all practice's are that relaxed. You have to be yourself.

I'm also head nurse so lead by example & also have other staff with blue& purple hair.
