To cut a long story short, I am currently on a casual contract with my employers (work when needed), which I fit in around family life and keep with a practice I have been employed with for 10 years (Have been on

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

Tower gates are good I think. Google indemnity insurance. Vds do some cover for nurses, but I read it as advice only, not actually a pay out, but I could be wrong.

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

Who would I go to get insurance?

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

I am a self employed locum. I charge £14/15 per hour. I have my own liability insurance. I have also been advised by my accountant to draft a statement which both parties sign -myself and the practice- which states I am self employed etc. tax return is easy - did it myself online. Just record everything on a spreadsheet throughout the year and it's easy. Every time I get paid a % goes straight to another account ready to pay tax/ni. You have to set up your own pension also. Some practices won't hire a self employed nurse, but I've only found one chain that is like this. I have been locumming since March and have had no problems. There is lots of work out there at the moment. And I haven't worked weekends, evenings it nights! Amazing!

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

in fairness, it wouldn't be something that could directly have an adverse effect on you, it's the employer who would carry any liability, but something worth considering.

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

Hmmm....sounds even more complex then I imagined!

RE: Going self employed - loads of questions!!!

One thing you (in reality the practice) would need to consider is wether or not you would be truly self employed - you and/or the practice can put all the contractual arrangements of self employment in place, but HMRC will be interested in the actual/practical nature of the working relationship. If it's found that it isn't really self employment, the practice will be liable for any national insurance and/or tax contributions that should have been made and potentially penalties.

HMRC have an employment status indicator tool https://www.gov.uk/guidance/employment-status-indicator

It's not a perfect tool as the answer can vary depending on your interpretation/answers to the questions. If you have been working for this practice for some time (regardless of the fact that it's variable hours) and you will continue to work for them in a similar format, not for a fixed term and this is your only employment, I would be looking at the term "self employed" and taking a very big pinch of salt.
