Does anyone have a reliable reference to say what dilution to use bleach (and what percent the bleach is to start with!) to use to disinfect an enclosure that has had giardia in it?
Thanks

RE: bleach to disinfect giardia

Household Bleach is generally supplied at medium strength, that being 50,000ppm. Standard infection control guidelines for the use of chlorine against body spills would be 10,000ppm of availabel chlorine. As such, to deal with haemorrhagic diarrhoea (say infected with Parvovirus) would require a 1:5 (20% dilution)

Thin Bleach through as from discount stores is supplied at 25,000ppm and thick bleach as used in toilets is supplied at 100,000ppm.

Laboratory discard is generally treated using 2,500ppm and general environmental disinfection can be managed at 1,000ppm.

It shoudl be noted that chlorine is less effective when in the presence of high soil conditions.

RE: bleach to disinfect giardia

According to work undertaken by Edward L.
Products such as ANIGENE NaDCC deliver 1000ppm of available chlorine from 1 tablet in 1 litre of water and are generally effectove against other organisms including viruses (see manufacturers information for more data).

RE: bleach to disinfect giardia

Cheers Sal

RE: bleach to disinfect giardia

household bleach varies between 3 and 6%
