Agreed. I do blame the system - but for the system to exist there have to be people who propose or support it in the first place. I am challenging a system that is critically flawed

To which I would say, don't blame them (anyone who looks down), blame the system!

It's the system which has created the 'them and us' situation. If you create a system in which one group of people are made to feel special and another group is not being publicly valued enough, of course you're going to cause the one group to look down on the other (or a tendency for that to happen, anyway).

Still doesn't get over the problem of language. I mean, what else do you call a Head Nurse who is not an RVN that makes any sense to the public. I fear we'll go down the route of some silly meaningless job title: Patient and Customer Care Executive, or some such guff.

I hear what you are saying. I did the blood sweat and tears thing to qualify, yes it felt good when I eventually got there but at the moment I feel ashamed to put RVN after my name - ashamed because of what that qualification has become and the way some RVNs are looking down on others who can be more than capable of doing the job.

Now Sal, you're falling into the same trap of being critical of people who value their qualification, by saying 'those who somehow feel they are special'

I don't think that because someone values a qualification that they've worked hard to get, that means they feel somehow special (in the way your post reads). And anyway, what if they do? I got my pilot's license and it made me feel a bit special. I'm sure I'd feel the same if I qualified as an RVN.

I do agree with you that I don't think the general public cares very much either way.

That doesn't mean its unimportant. Again, to draw a parallel, I'm not sure I would have been best pleased if I'd trained as a pilot and anyone could call themselves one, and present themselves at the British Airways office and ask for a job!

well I have broad shoulders and I am up to it - I see the whole exercise as pointless.It won't solve anything,it won't change anything other than appeasing those who somehow feel that they are special, it wont change the way vets view nursing staff, it won't make a deal of difference to the general public ( you are kidding yourselves if you think it will) it just means those without the lettuce after their names find another name.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about posting something about that.

It was removed because C Jenkins asked me to delete her account, because she was fed up with what she felt was a lot of 'negativity' about ANAs (not just in that thread). When an account is deleted, I usually delete threads belonging to the author because otherwise it renders forum discussions nonsensical.

Reviewing her older posts, I have to say that I rather agreed with her point. A difficult situation. Completely understandable that RVNs want to protect their title. But equally, there are a lot of highly experienced people out there with a 'lesser' qualification than RVN, or no qualification at all, who are at least the match of some RVNs. I suspect C Jenkins was one!

I think the bottom line is: sure, the profession is moving towards protection of the title, but nevertheless, let's have some respect and understanding for those who've gone a different route.

I find it really sad that somebody who has been in the job a long time and is clearly valued and respected by the people they are employed by to the extent that they promote them to head nurse cannot be equally respected by some of us :-( - if by any chance C Jenkins can read this I am on your side

Couldnt have put it better myself Arlo. Thats a shame that C Jenkins felt the need to delete her account but have to say I have noticed the same attitudes myself on this forum towards unqualified nurses so I can see her point fully. Its a situation that I myself, as an experienced sole charge VCA am finding very difficult now. The bottom line is that not everyone is fortunate enough to get the chance to work in a training practice and get qualified but nevertheless there are some people who have many years of experience doing the same job as a RVN. They deserve respect for their skills and knowledge, not treated as inferior to every RVN just because they dont possess the qualification. Someone with 15 years or more experience but not registered or someone registered but only a couple of years in practice? I know which one Id rather have looking after my animals. There is much to be learned in practice that you cant get from books.
