I have to say that we had an unfortunate case of using Facebook to catch someone out who was off "sick".

I won't go into specifics here for obvious reasons but suffice to say that she no longer works for the practice.

As the Head Nurse, I am friends on Facebook with all of my nurse, past and present. I have stipulated that if you wouldn't say it to my face then it shouldn't be posted on Facebook. Especially not as a status!

would just like to say it isnt just facebook to beware of - lots of bosses come on here too under various guises. the thing is I could have said plenty over the years - and all of it true but I havnt because I like to think that I can be more professional about things than some of the back stabbers I have worked for

Some of my studemts have taken photos or restraint or other procedures they have been involved in for their portfolio and we were advised by our IV that we needed permission from the owner.

That's a very good point that hadn't even crossed my mind. We have a 'Pet of the Month' display, if it's been an interesting case, and always ask the owners if we can use their pet because we also take photo's of the animals face.

It would never have occured to me to ask permission for an unidentifiable wound on a clients pet.

Hi , I would normally advise people that they always have to be aware when they post anything on ANY website..even a social networking site therorectically only open to friends that t is always public. A big issue legally for employers, especially in a veterinary scenario is breaches of data protection ..this really includes general comments about clents and patients that could be misconstrued or viewed poorly by a client and also photos of patients. We recently had a big stink about this issue at work. I have frequenty taken pictures of interesting cases/wildlife etc., and shared them on facebook as I know they are of interest to lots of other VN's but this has been banned in my workplace and this also includes pictures of people messing around ( even if on a break ) if they ar pictured on work premises or in uniform... I still have a few daft old ones but have severely restricted who can see them so it is effectively restricted to VN's. An interesting thing to come out of the work debate was a difference of perspective on clinical pics as well. One of the receptionists found it inconceivable that a VN would share ictures of a wound for example ...she thought this was really inappropriate and odd ..yet most of the vets and vn's I know disagreed as they found them of interest ...it was eye opening as I suppose this is how a client would see it and that needs to be bourne i mind...It also open up a big can of worms in issues of consent about pictures ..should we be asking client's before we take them ( even if their pet is unidentifiable ) It's an interesting one

Thanks for that Ian, very useful to know. Although I think I tend just to moan about situations without naming names or specifics, I can see how it could potentially be perceived so I will keep my grumblings to myself! I wonder how many people actually realise the potential seriousness of comments made on there?

I know the RDSVS had to issue several emails over the last couple of years and then talk to students in lectures to warn them about putting dissection pictures/general practical pictures on there especially if made public viewing. There was also a very unfortunate incident recently where a facebook group was set up in memory of a lecturer who hadnt actually yet died!

Actually you can be dismissed if you talk about your work in any way whether it is a derogatory comment about your boss, mentioning something someone did at work or posting whilst you are at work.

Also talking about work could be seen as a breach of the practices confidentiality policy and definately a breach of the data protection act, which not only is a dismissable offense, but potentially in a worst case scenario lead to the Information Commisioners Office (ICO) prosecuting the individual responsible for the breach and fining them up to £5000.

If in doubt dont mention work on facebook.

My current boss regularly checks on our facebook pages, one of our vets was recently given a formal warning over using it and Twitter during working hours. I have no problem with him objecting to this, I do think it would be unfair to search our pages for everything said though as everyone likes to vent now and then! My profile is friends only, however this is more for worrk of identity theft than anything else.

Scary thought. Not too sure on the legalities as you are publishing your thoughts to the general public, but i would've thought that deliberately going out of their way to spy on you for business reasons would be similar to entrapment. Am sure you would have grounds for unfair dismissal case if they sacked you for saying you didn't like your boss. On the other hand, if it was posted during works time then it may well have been a breach of their Internet Usage regulations. If you posted it in your own time, on your own computer and you weren't saying anything libellous then i don't think they can legally touch you.

No in your preferences when you add a friend or even on friends you already have added you can edit the access they have to your profile. Like for instance you can only give them access to your wall or to some of the photos in your albums. You can also limit who has access to your profile details and contact information... etc..

Thats what I had to do recently. Someone tried to get me into trouble with my boss (even went so far as to print out my Facebook page!) ended up backfiring on her & she may be getting a written warning (a whole nother story!) Suffice to say - trust no one!!

Whatever information you put up anywhere where other people can see it waives any rights to privacy. It may be really bad on their parts but there is no law against what they are doing. I suggest removing them from your profile.

If you post information on a free access site like facebook, and give people permission to view it via your profile you dont have any rights to keep it private as this is not what you are doing when you allow people to view it. Unfortunatly there is nothing you can do about it.

Not sure but if you are worried about it give them a limited profile preference in your settings. you can limit the amount of information they can see, otherwise I believe it's fair game if you give them access.
