I have my OSCEs in December and I do not feel preprared whatsoever. I try doing some practice at work but most of the time it's in dribs and drabs and I don't feel fully supported by my clinical coach at all! I just know it's going to be one

RE: OSCE Prep

I have the clinical skills OSCE videos on DVD to sell?
I'll ask at work tomorrow if I could go in on weekends or something and definitely start working out kinks in my daily routine.

I think videos would be really helpful, I wish they did official ones! Maybe I'll check YouTube xxx

RE: OSCE Prep

Firstly try not to panic as this won't help you!

Make sure that you have printed the tasks then try to run through them on a daily basis at work. It should be fairly easy to do this with a lot of the tasks as you do these things on a daily basis. It's just a case of changing your habits so that you routinely perform tasks to OSCE standard. That way it becomes second nature and you are more likely to perform it well in the exam situation.

Get into the habit of working out drug doses properly rather than referring to a chart at work

Stick a WHO handwashing guide by the sink so that you always wash your hands correctly

Take home a pair of surgical gloves to practice

On quiet afternoons practice your xray positioning using a soft toy

Practice calculating your drip rates and working out the drops per minute even if you use fluid pumps

Hope some of that helps!

Good luck

RE: OSCE Prep

do you think videos would help, detailing each step that you can do at home?

RE: OSCE Prep

Don't worry there is plenty you can do. I practised at home and also went in to the practice during any time off that I had...that way I was 'there' to practise and not to work until my shift started. My employer also let me go in on the weekends when the branch was closed so I could practise in quiet with all the kit there....would they let you do this? I did not get any help from my clinical coach either and no one else in the practise was able to help much.

If you haven't already make yourself an OSCE folder, print out each task sheet to memorise and give yourself an extra sheet to write down any notes.

I would also recommend going to the OSCE prep days...I did 2 days at CAW Huntingdon and it was very helpful.

RE: OSCE Prep

Thank you for replying :)

I dropped out of the July sit due to personal reasons and took FOREVER to pass my anaesthesia exam so wasn't ready for the October sit so now I feel like I need to crack on and get the December one nailed but stressing myself out in the process.

I'll try anything if it means getting myself that badge!

RE: OSCE Prep

Hey, first of all well done for getting almost to the finish line - not far now!

Its not ideal but dont forget you dont HAVE to sit your OSCEs in december if you do not feel ready by then, make sure you know when the last date is you can pull out. You shouldnt sit them if it gets to that time and you dont feel ready at all.

I would recommend paying to go to at least one OSCE practice day at another college I did this and found it extremely helpful and i passed first time.

I practiced for hours and hours at home. learning all the steps in my head, some people on here recommended writing down the stages over and over until they were memorised. college should be supporting you with your OSCEs also. They should have areas there where you can practice, even if you have to take time off work to do this as holiday.

I had a lovely collegue who met me at work during time off and practiced with me one morning.

All told i learnt and practiced my OSCES in dribs and drabs but it all adds up in the end.

Even if you had not done any practice before now, theoretically you would still have plenty of time no nail it if you make some plans for the next few weeks so dont panic its not too late!

good luck :)
