I have always had a weakness with calculations + was wondering if anyone had access to practice IVF + drug calculation questions. Have been making my own but don't feel

RE: Retaking OSCES struggling with drug + IV calculations

I agree, practise on every case that you can. I also found that I had to write down the steps for the calculations e.g:

kg x losses (ml/kg/24hrs) = ml/ day
ml/ 24hrs divided by 24hr/ day = ml/hr
ml/hr divided 60min/hr = ml/min
drip/min divided 60 sec/min = drp/ sec OR 60 sec/ min divided drp/ min = sec/ drp

days, hours, minutes, seconds.

when I got to the exam I wrote down the steps first and then put the numbers in afterwards. The formula doesn't change only the numbers going into it. Hope this helps, but it all depends on how you remember things best, even if it is a great big colourful picture stuck to every door :)

Good luck for your examsx

RE: Retaking OSCES struggling with drug + IV calculations

thanks for the advice :)

RE: Retaking OSCES struggling with drug + IV calculations

practice practice every day on real life patients , you can work out and draw up your pre meds individually for patients, i never used a chart always work them out, same with the aneasthetic flow rates and drip rates, this helped me a lot as you resort to doing what you always do in practice when you are stressed in an exam situation :) i cannot stress enough i passed on the day because of this and i never ever thought i could do it :) also college gave us a massive calculations work book which had loads of examples in so maybe ask your teacher? and get vets and nurses to make some up for you at work too good luck!!!!!
