so I work full time and also the odd locum shift and I use an umbrella company who I won't name at this point as it wasn't cost effective for me to become a limited company.
I've just sent an email via your website to get registered. Still no joy with getting my current issues resolved and also am very confused as to when I work 3 shifts I only end up earning about £40 more than when I do 2! I've asked numerous times for them to explain it to me but all they say is that their calculations are correct!

Will hopefully speak to you tomorrow and get registered

thank you for the information,I will be in touch with you next week

RE: Umbrella company possibly ripping me off!

Good afternoon Raceila

I cannot comment on the poor response that you have had from the payroll team at your current umbrella company, but I can recommend a couple of points on choosing an umbrella company for you and any other vet nurses out there who do locum work:

1. In order to know that you will never have any problems as a result of tax treatment, I would always recommend using only those umbrella companies who carry the FCSA accreditation. This is a compliance stamp that gives you peace of mind that your tax affairs are being handled correctly as there are many poor operators in the market who cut corners.

2. Under the FCSA code of conduct, the amount deducted from you cannot be linked directly (ie 4%) to how much you earn. Some umbrellas will work better for you, where they operate a tiered margin, where in order not to penalise you for only working one shift, there is a lower amount deducted than the full week's margin that a 40 hour a week locum would incur.

3. Report your dissatisfaction to your agency or employer, as they will have quite a lot of leverage to resolve your queries quicker.

Finally, I can recommend a fair, compliant, FCSA accredited umbrella company that I run called Liquid Friday. Our deduction for vet nurses who earn gross income of up to £150 per week is just £8, for gross pay of £150-£300 it is £18 and over £300 incurs our full margin of £24. Take a look at our website at www.liquidfriday.co.uk or call us on 0800 316 6030.

For those of you who run your own Ltd Company to engage on locum work, I recommend looking at www.boox.co.uk .

If I can be of any further assistance to any readers, please get in touch.

All the best, Phil

RE: Umbrella company possibly ripping me off!

No problem, their contact number is 0330 100 8686 Good luck!

RE: Umbrella company possibly ripping me off!

Hi

Sorry to hear you haven't had a very good experience, the Umbrella company should provide you with a detailed breakdown of your pay. I have lots of locum Vets and Nurses working with me and I always recommend using a company called Outsauce, they have always been great for us here at Purosearch.

I hope this helps, it is always handy to be registered just in case you have a little spare time, at least then you are paid very easily if a last minute locum comes up.
