I am a newly qualified VN (awaiting registration) and just wanted a bit of advise really. Or maybe just writing it down will help me think clearer.
I love my current practice - have made some great friends, I know all the clients, my employers

RE: Just qualified and not sure if I should move practice or not.

If you would like to try a few shifts at other practices I have lots of day vacancies that come in all of the time for cover at great practices- it would be fab to hear from you! We have tried honestly! Thing is we just don't have the patients or case load. Quite often we have days where we only see a few regular consults, and not anything that requires any nursing. When we do have patients in we normally always have a vet student on EMS placement who is considered priority for taking bloods, placing catheters etc.

I think I am just very bored there and there is not much going on to stimulate me. We have tried nurse consults but again we didn't really have much up take.

RE: Just qualified and not sure if I should move practice or not.

Hi

i agree,if you have good managers then you should speak to them and suggest the nurses do more of the practical things. If you're newly qualified then in theory you should feel competent doing them but with any skills if you don't use them you can lose them , practice makes perfect and all that! I think that if you're happy where you are then moving may not be a good idea, the grass is very rarely greener and if you end up leaving and going somewhere else that you end up not enjoying you may have burnt your bridges with your previous employer so may not be able to return. I think that speaking to you manager should be your next step. US nurses have awesome skills,we just need more vets to appreciate this! I'm so lucky thst I work somewhere where nurses are used to their full potential and are very highly valued and trusted

good luck!

RE: Just qualified and not sure if I should move practice or not.

Hi,

Well your place sounds fantastic! You should feel very lucky that you have 'absolutely lovely' managers! If they are that great why don't you approach them about taking on more responsibilities such as placing catheters and taking bloods etc? Or doing nurse clinics? If what you have is good I would strongly recommend trying to improve it before jumping ship. I wish I had more time to clean! I have the complete opposite problem to you in that where I work it is so busy (chaotic not organised!) that I feel nothing is done 'properly'!
