I've been a night nurse at a very busy hospital for about 18months now and although I love the nature of the work and the team I work with I have noticed in the past month or so that the stress and shift pattern is starting to get to me

RE: Part-time locumming?

Hiya,

I've done very successful part-time locuming stints that fit in well with my QOL and bank account. This also with managing another (financial industry) part-time job as well.

I've found that even if you can't offer a full week or an extended continuous period most practices are glad of some help rather than none at all!

As it's your first crack at locuming I'd suggest making an approach to an agency first e.g. synergyvets (who I am still with - I rate them very highly) to discuss the best status for you e.g. on their books as PAYE or self-employed/umbrella etc etc

http://www.synergyvets.com/

and they'll make approaches to practices on their books with what and when you are available for work. Take it from there.

Remember you need VDS insurance - see - http://www.veterinarydefencesociety.co.uk/index.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Good luck. Remain well. Recover your mojo!

True I don't have the money to spend on luxuries but weighing it up I am better off mentally and physically. I do a number of volunteer bits and bobs for various places (which gives me experience and gets my face known in other areas I might like to expand on when I finally hang up the uniform). What sort of jobs were you thinking about outside of nursing? - you may have a lot more useful skills than you think. I have done a short stint in prison work before, and also a dependency clinic - not everybody's cup of tea maybe but it worked for me.If you think you might be interested in complementary therapies as a part time income give me a shout.

At one place I worked we used to have a nurse who just worked Mondays and Fridays and the Tuesdays or Thursdays she used to run a slimming group , she made a pretty good income from it by all accounts.

RE: Part-time locumming?

Sorry to hear that you're having such a bad time! I think the idea of night work is always great but as a permanent long term job I don't think it is good for general well being.

If it makes you feel better / more confident about part time locumming, I have various nurses who I speak to on a regular basis who work weekends or every 3rd week or every Tuesday and Thursday for example. It isn't hard to pick up locum shifts when you're available. It would just mean creating a good relationship with an agency and keeping in touch with your availability. there is always work available.

I hope this helps, it sounds like it is definitely time for you to take a step back from the nights though!
