Now I am doing more ad hoc work at various local practices, 2 or 3 or 4 days a week, maybe only 1 for a client then another day for a different clinic - instead of a couple months

RE: Question for Locum Nurses - moving from umbrella service to own limited company

Hi Sophie

Please could you email that information to me as I am considering going limited due to the changes in expenses.

I always use "Outsauce" as the umbrella company for my candidates as I deal with them all the time and have a contact there called Jake who is lovely and is very on the ball! I don't know whether this is one you have tried but I have had very minimal issues with them, and the few I have had have been resolved between myself and Outsauce - no stress for the nurse :)

As for limited company or self employed - always a great idea for any experienced locums. There are numerous companies who assist you in the transition and essentially work as your accountant, I work with one in particular who have no set up fee or contract/tie in periods and they're all really professional.

I'd be happy to email you the information I have about them with examples of how much you would take home compared to using an umbrella - it's really helpful at a glance! just let me know and I can pop it across :D

RE: Question for Locum Nurses - moving from umbrella service to own limited company

Thanks for the reply Raceila.

I've used two different umbrella companies in the past 3 years.

- The first one I used for two years and every time I was in touch with them I spoke to a different person which was not ideal. Then I went travelling for a couple of months earlier this year and when I got back I found a P45 from them in my post as I hadn't provided an invoice for a few weeks so they'd decided that I had ended my 'employment' with them. Though I hadn't been aware that I'd needed to keep them informed about my travel plans. They even got themselves confused many times over my profession - and in my opinion if I am paying them to provide this service to me that is unacceptable - surely the info is there on their computers?

- The second company I chose because they supposedly have a team dedicated to veterinary, they were recommended to me (by someone who received an incentive bonus for it), and they gave me similar quotes to the first umbrella company. I started using them this summer. At first I was happy with them but I am receiving a much lower salary and paying them more AND having to chase them constantly for contract confirmations / payments from clients / reminders about expenses etc. Why? Either they are growing too fast and can't cope or they can't do their job. I have also found them negotiating my invoices / salary with the client?!! That's a first for me

As far as I am aware there are 3 big umbrella companies recommended through advertising to us vet nurses. I have used two of them. Do I even consider trying the third? So I thought why not do this admin myself seeing as I seem to be doing most of it for myself anyway. That's why I am looking into either limited company or self-employed .

RE: Question for Locum Nurses - moving from umbrella service to own limited company

Have you looked into using a different umbrella company as some have different fee structures?
