It annoys me too as I am an HCPC Registered Paramedic and I worked hard to get my qualification (as well as a Veterinary Nursing Assistant...soon to become a trainee Vet nurse!)

The public already assumes that every member of the ambulance service is a "Paramedic!"...when there are staff who are purely drivers as well as Technicians!...what made issues even more annoying the provision of all staff with exactly the same shade of green uniforms (when drivers had blue previously!)...it is a fact that the public do not read your job title on your epaulettes...."you must be a Paramedic!"...obviously the union is taking a dim view of this but it doesn't fight our case either when non-qualified professionals call themselves "Paramedics" too!

I totally sympathise with the Veterinary Nurse title too...you work hard for your professional qualification and only those who have it should be allowed to use the title! (and I do know of practices who allow their non-qualified staff to wear greens!)

It takes about 2 minutes to get the template letter from RCVS website and you can even find your MP with a postcode search - I have mine to post later when I go out.

While 100,000 signatures may sound a lot, there are 58million pet owners out there so getting this message out to owners is the key as it won't be achieved from within the profession alone.

A lot of us feel passionately about this issue so if we all spread the word and the message to dog trainers, groomers, kennels/catteries, charity events and anywhere and everywhere pet owners are then 100,000 isn't that big a number

We are VN's after all and we never let a challenge beat us!

I would take petition into work but I have no RVNs in practice to support me,I'm the only one training and all the vets including the boss are quite happy calling the others girls,with no formal training, veterinary nurses! makes my blood boil!!! Hi there

It is disappointing to hear that you and other RVNs are in this situation. Perhaps you could find a gentle way to refer the veterinary surgeons in your practice to section 3.5 of the Code of Professional Conduct, which reads:

"Veterinary surgeons must not hold out themselves or others as ... veterinary nurses unless appropriately registered with the RCVS."

As this rule is in the Code it is mandatory.

In reference to your question about the petition: We are now close to the 10,000 signatures needed to receive an official response from the government. If we want the matter to be discussed in parliament then we will need to gather 100,000 signatures by February. That's no mean feat, but let's keep trying! The more signatures we receive the more support we will be able to show for the cause, and that will help us to persuade politicians to change the law.

Hi Everyone I feel really strongly about this petition working with RVNs, SVNs and international nurses who have to go through the RCVS registration process... I don't understand how anyone can be allowed to be called a veterinary nurse who has not earned it!

Pretty hard to achieve even outside the profession :)

The only way this could happen is if every practice or every registered nurse made a really concerted effort to get clients to sign the petition (probably right there in the practice). If half the practices in the country did that, they'd still need to get 60-odd clients each to sign the petition in order to start getting near the magic number.

I guess the key here is to also get the public involved. The magic number seems to be 100,000 signatures which may be hard to achieve within the profession! The strength would be in clients/public/pets owners understanding what this means and also backing it. The video in our WRs may help.. I wonder if there is a leaflet anywhere - I shall ask the RCVS.
