Adv c-section- owner refused. when obvious oxytocin not working agreed to c-section and eventually neutering. 1 live kitten delivered (happy days), large ovarian cyst on one ovary. on recovery cat refused to stay covered, and got colder and colder despite heat pads etc. BP started to drop and got very pale. PCV 17, low calcium- only one vet on for a friday night open surgery. vet stayed with cat giving it calcium while I had to triage (I was the only nurse after 4:30pm) a dog that was whining and bloated- turned out to be a cavalier that was constipated and possibly got some arthritis developing/minor soft tissue trauma in it's back. All the owners could go on about was this tiny wart on it's eyelid and wondering if it could be removed despite the classic severe cavy heart murmur. with permission from the vet administered micralax and made vet appt for saturday.

Back to mummy cat: mummy cat's calcium is now mid high range but potassium is low. ultrasound showed no free fluid in abdomen. O didn't have the money to go to VetsNow so we went back in. All ligatures in place but clots found so retied everything. Started to recover as we attempted to get her stable enough to go to vets now once the owners had been convinced that she really needed round the clock care. I went to photocopy all paperwork ready for transfer when the evening helper (an amazing girl about to start her VN training) ran upstairs and said the cat wasn't breathing. Legged it downstairs for CPR and re-intubation- got her back but she could sustain without oxygen so eventually owner agreed for euthanasia after kitten had had a really good suckle.

Eventually left work at 12:35am.

At the branch practice for saturday surgery 8:30-12:30- 2 inpatient cats who had completely trashed their kennels and only me and the vet. 1st phone call at 8:30 from a client who needed to euthanase their healthy 4yr old male mastiff as he had started to become aggressive and had bitten the owner and her partner and the felt they couldn't take the risk as they had a small child and another on the way.

RE: just having one of those days

Ah yes. Just remembered how much I DON'T miss Saturday surgeries

Oh I remember remarking to one man who was wrestling with 3 kids in the waiting room that he had his hands full and he responded with "Yeah is it any wonder I got a vasectomy!? "

It's amazing what personal information clients will share with you!!
