Worst case just wear dental goggles! I think you should be able to feel confident at work and feel like yourself as well and you clearly would do the right thing in the case that you needed to remove them.

I hope that you manage to get a solution but I am sure it is no major issue and there are always ways around things too. :) Stay happy xx
I am all for it, but who decides what is good practice
Those people working in a responsible position should decide what is good practice, and use evidence-based decisions.
Absolutely, couldn't agree more - my only concern is that there is small group of people out there trying to enforce a 'one size fits all' system (which fits perfectly for them but might be less than ideal or workable for others) and sometimes the evidence being used to substantiate 'best practice' or 'gold standard' or anything else you might want to call it doesn't always stand up to close scrutiny in all situations.
That said, in the absence of a clear cut answer, then yes it is down to the employers decision.
thank you - again we can agree on something

RE: Eyelash extensions ...
I am all for it, but who decides what is good practice
Those people working in a responsible position should decide what is good practice, and use evidence-based decisions. This definitely includes Veterinary Nurses. If I only did/accepted all the things the person who pays my wages decides, the infection control around here would be questionable indeed. Vets, in my experience, frequently depend on their nurses to take the lead in areas such as biosecurity, and in areas where there is a lack of evidence in veterinary literature on such matters, human health research is the natural place to start I would have thought.

That said, in the absence of a clear cut answer, then yes it is down to the employers decision.

RE: Eyelash extensions ...

the reason I get annoyed is that people cherry pick the bits that benefit themselves personally that they have seen in other places because it is what they want and whether or not it is actually relevant or practical to veterinary practice they will do their damndest to bring them in.
I don't think there is anything wrong with looking to other places that demonstrate good practice and taking note of their policies then deciding what works or doesn't work in a Veterinary Setting.
And I don't disagree with that at all. I am all for it, but who decides what is good practice

Anyways to the original poster - I hope there is a solution for you out there,ie is there another area in the practice that you are really interested in that wouldn't need you to scrub in? If you speak to somebody in HR can they suggest anything else?

RE: Eyelash extensions ...

I'm not sure why you would get annoyed when people look to other organisations for what they may be doing. The NHS strongly supports evidence based practice. I don't scrub in much in theatre anymore but again when I have none of the surgeons have minded. I am the same as you and they are the one 'girly' thing that I get done. I think as long as you go to a good quality beautician and maintain them so they don't shed too much then there shouldn't be a problem.

Ps - some of our female clients love them, and now go to get them done in the same place as me

RE: Eyelash extensions ...

sorry I didn't catch that bit - and I do agree with you that the standards in veterinary can be higher than the human field - so slap my wrist and I promise to read more carefully next time .

I do get a bit annoyed when every single time something like this crops up people always say xy or z happens in the NHS or somewhere else - it doesn't matter what everybody else is doing, it doesn't matter what the NHS are doing or not doing (unless you have an NHS manager running the gaff) its what the person who pays your wages wants that matters (so long as its legal)

RE: Eyelash extensions ...

I think you may have the wrong end of my post. I stated BBC as there was a report this weekend, on how the care with the human field is no where near than veterinary. Practices have their own rules/standards for a reason, they aren't negotiable, you accept them when you take a job. Same goes for piercings, tattoos, hair colouring, nail varnish, long nails or a few other things

To the OP just let them grow out/ fall off whatever these things do - use a decent mascara when you are not at work or you could always have your own eyelashes dyed if you are looking for something more permanent, but the more you muck about with them the chances are the thinner they will get. My own lashes are very sparse and have been for years but I gave up on this palaver years ago - if people can't accept me for who I am then ..... Just as an aside if if your eyelashes are very very sparse and there is no reason why they should be then might be worth a check up with the doc.

the RCN guidance states that its a local rule so individual to each department http://www.rcn.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/78652/002724.pdf (page 9)

doing a quick google search the dress code policy at Sheffield includes that false eyelashes are not allowed. https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.29489!/file/DressCodePolicy.pdf (page 5)

I actually can't find anything that permits it to be honest and i don't allow them in my clinical area either

RE: Eyelash extensions ...

this is had to answer being male. but in my previous practices for the wormen this was a big no no, especially in theatre. with risk of falling off and entering wound (even thou this was a very low risk). there was also concerns of setting the image for the practice. this natural and not "fake and done up for a Friday night out".

With regards to the Hospital, there are different rules. but the human medical standards are not as great as veterinary. see the BBC report from the weekend.
