In September I'm going to be going into my fourth year of my veterinary nursing degree and I'm beginning to think about what to do for my dissertation. My university have provided no guidance as to potential areas/topics of study they would

RE: Really struggling with my dissertation choices?!

Hi

My dissertation was on does passive smoking in dogs have any effect on the heart rate and blood pressure. I did this as I have family members who smoke and seeing the effect it has on them and with the research done in passive smoking in humans it interested me.

I agree you need to be able to have access to the subject area you have chosen. Try and do a area your interested in, it makes the research and the whole experience of a dissertation easier, I found especially at the viva voce. But before you decide do your research and phone about to see if your able to get the sample numbers you require.

Good luck.

RE: Really struggling with my dissertation choices?!

My dissertation was on the mental wellbeing of veterinary nurses. I used an already valid scale to measure wellbeing and posted this out to different practices: which i divided into England, Scotland , Wales and Northern ireland, also a mixture of different types of practices. I also asked about gender, age, position in practice and hours worked.

Choose something you like and make it simple. You will get more help in your fourth year.

what things are you interested in? Also where do you work? you will need to work somewhere where you will have access to the right info/ cases. For example there is no point choosing a topic about orthopaedic surgery if you only see an ortho op once a month.

RE: Really struggling with my dissertation choices?!

Not quite veterinary nursing as I studied equine dentistry at uni. But my dissertation looked into the impact of dentistry on grinding ability, and relating this to the various dental problems of my subject horses. It basically involved lots of measuring un-digested fibre in faeces before dentistry and 2 weeks after dentistry!!

I really struggled to come up with an idea at uni for a dissertation. Do you have a dissertation supervisor/lecturer? They may be able to help you out? My uni also had lots of previous students dissertations in the library that we were able to sift through for some ideas. Is this an option at all?
