I did an 8 week stint as a locum a couple of months ago when I was between jobs. I registered and used Macpro as my umbrella company. Patrick was the contact I had there and he was always helpful and quick to reply to any queries. When I left they issued my P45 the following week, so I could pass it onto my new employer. Would really recommend them and had no issues at all.

I've been locuming for the last year and never heard anything about this? I'm now starting a permanent position again but I was locuming for a Vets 4 Pets and thought they would have been informed if this was the case?

I work out my tax myself through self assessment and claimed back fuel costs etc :)

They tell me due to the IR35 that came in last April you can't be a slef employed locum nurse anymore!?

We use a company called Outsauce we don't have any problems with them! It is a lot easier to use and umbrella company at first then go ltd later I think!

apparently agencies cant pay folk self employed because of some rules they need to abide by on how they need to do it. you can be self employed. I think if you work directly for the end hospital though you can be self employed but dont quote me on it

I am a self employed locum and have had no problems. Some big companies (CVS I think?!) won't hire a self employed locum, you have to be a ltd company or go through a umbrella company.

Why can't you be self employed?! Where is this info from?

I've used a couple of different umbrella type companies all fairly ok but came across a company called Pinnacle, as a recommendation from a colleague first on the umbrella thing and then I moved to set up my own company which they helped with and now do my accounts for. They were great, helped put me in touch with a couple of agencies too when my contracts were coming to an end which was really useful.

The service has been really good and they go well beyond what i've experienced as the norm and are a damn site cheaper too which is a brucey bonus.

Ditto ditto ditto - I used to use Danbro when I locumed and it was great - you tell them the hours you worked that week (signed off by your practice) and they pay you, no worries (also you can claim all sorts of expenses for travelling etc which is great, and this isn't charged to your practice, it comes out of tax or something..)

Ok so maybe being a limited company I'd be a couple of hundred quid better off per year (no idea, never looked into it) but as I tend to practice a "head in the sand" approach to financial matters I feel like I'm paying that amount as a fee to make my life easier and happy to take that hit, especially if you're having accommodation supplied, you're earning good money!

I use an umbrella company called macpro who are great,never had any issues and they are always quick to reply with any queries I may have. A friend of mine has set herself up as a limited company but when I started looking into it it looked so complicated that I thought I'd stick with the the umbrella company! From what I can gather you have to pay a fee to become a limited company and then you create your own invoice to send to where you've worked and then at the end of the year you file a tax return therefore when you get paid it's totally down to you to sort your tax and NI which would mean ensuring that you set aside some of the pay for this purpose. Having had issues with the tax office taking too much tax off me in the past and a 2 year fight to get it back I much prefer paying the umbrella company to sort it out for me!

I use an umbrella company because, quite franky, I'm too lazy and can't be bothered doing my own taxes and such. Either the practice or the agency pay them and they take your tax and NI off then add expenses back on and pay you. I use Danbro and have never had any problems with them and they're quick to answer any questions I have regarding expenses and such.

I can't tell you anything about limited company, sorry.
