It is very sad. I was given an interview for my job (which I am still in 13 years later) on the strength that out of all the applicants I was the only one who wrote a 'proper' covering letter for my CV. They told me this after I got the job, obviously they read my CV too, but that first impression really counted!

I was informed last night that the main branch has given the ok and the work experience request we had recently with the bad grammar and appalling communication skills is doing a weeks experience with us next week heaven help me. Its a quite practice at times so am going to have to get my thinking cap on and find some jobs for her to do.

Just had a chuckle to myself, I think it was on this forum where I read that someone was training to be a barista and was wondering how she could manage on VN wages. I hate spelling mistakes but then realised it was actually me who was in the wrong this time!

PS My pet hate is a CV with vetinary in it.....oh and don't get me started ao the letters with no capital letters...hey ho think I'm getting old :D

Nope,, she sent her cv to us via email.. Said she sends birthday cards etc via Internet!! My daughter is 24 just 3 years older and I'm pleased to say she does know how to write and stamp a letter!!!!

Hi Callie,

I feel your pain, it seems to be the way of the world these days that people do not properly construct their emails. I got so sick of students not composing emails properly that I now make email etiquette part of their college induction with reminders when needed!!

I suspect that texting has a lot to answer for!

that's just sooo bad. I remember being taught this in middle school. We had a specific class dedicated to handwriting and grammar etc. Biro's and pencils were banned in that class - it HAD to be a fountain pen. Its so sad that everything is done on computer these days and its crazy that text speak is finding its way into the Oxford dictionary. No wonder so many kids are practically illiterate these days. It won't be long before our whole language has changed.

I love letters too. How sad. She never even wrote a postcard or sent a birthday card by post?!? Or a cv??!!

not any more - many are being schooled in a paper free environment - new skills may be learnt but they are at the expense of the basics.

bit like the current vet nurse training when you think about it

What the hell are these kids being taught at school??? Surely writing a letter is something basic

My two favourite emails are; the never ending sentence! A whole email where no punctuation is used at all!

then my second favourite is: can you tell me about my account/ my pets last vaccination/ etc, Kate. No surname, no pets name, no address!!!
