I've just been asked if I'd like to become a clinical coach for our practice but I'm unsure whether it's for me or not? Can anyone help by letting me know what it involves as when I search for info all that seems to come up are courses for it

RE: Clinical coaching - what's involved?

Basically, you are responsible for the training of student VNs.

Students have a log of all the day one skills required by a VN. You will need to demonstrate these skills to students and agree their competency once you feel that they can perform those skills to a satisfactory level. You will therefore need to work closely with the students.

You will also need to plan student learning so you will need to have regular tutorials to assess their progress.

I find being a clinical coach very rewarding. I really enjoy teaching and mentoring so it suits me well. I do find it difficult to find time during working hours to sit down and check up on the students progress but I do enjoy the role.

RE: Clinical coaching - what's involved?

As a recently completed student i can say my clinical coach was amazing and it took a lot of dedication from both of us to get through the course!

He helped me with setting up scenarios for some of the tasks on the log, demonstrating all of the tasks to me and arranging with other nurses whether they were more suited in some areas. Weekly meetings to review my progress and make a plan of action for the week ahead and endless ticking boxes and writing comments on my log! It's very time consuming!
He said he enjoyed the experience and i think it can be rewarding but he has said he won't be doing it again!
I've seen other clinical coaches that don't put much in to it and end up with frustrated students so i mean it does take some dedication, you need to be passionate and want to do it! A previous clinical coach i originally had would just tick off all of my tasks whenever where as the clinical coach i ended up having would discuss each task and whether i was ready to tick it off and just quiz me a little with some of the more extensive ones!. Obviously there are courses that need to be attended to learn the basics so thats where you'd learn most of it!

Hope you make the right decision for you and enjoy it if you do it!
