Hi all,
I am just writing to get some tips/advise about how to go about gaining a Student position!
Basically Im a 21 year Old Patient care assistant of 9 months working in a floating position. I have just gained a place

RE: Student nurse Positions

Is there an option for you to stay at your current practice and go to the college that they send their students too? If they have promised to train you do you know when this might be? They may have a waiting list of staff to train.

I only suggest this because student positions are like needle in haystacks, and most practices will prefer to train a current member of staff, rather than advertise externally. I was a PCA for about 15 months until my practice was able to send me to college. My practice only send students to CAW, so this was the college that I had to go to.

There may be other reasons they may not be able to/want to support you going to a different college such as costs (if they are paying for you?), paperwork etc?

RE: Student nurse Positions

I have just finished working for 2 years unpaid to complete my nursing training! It's a really difficult decision and takes a lot of dedication but sometimes it is the only option to get anywhere!

I'd say you've done everything possible at this stage as you clearly have a lot of experience, could you possibly wait till next year and find a job at a different practice? Most practices seem to take on their assistant staff as students so if you move practice maybe you could get in line for the opportunity? If not even volunteering a few days/small amount of time somewhere is better than nothing, it's all about your attitude and how much of an impact you can make in that small time! :)

Good luck!
