We have a 6th former in for two weeks to see practice. A bank holiday has just passed so there's not many ops or consults in at the moment. Running out of ideas to keep her occupied. So far we have covered the following - xray, ultrasound

RE: Work experience help

Well done! I've not seen anyone get that much out of their work experience before, they'll have a plethora of experiences to share when they go back to school and a clear indicator of what the job entails.

It might be worth finding out what she enjoys doing and whether she looking to do nursing or to be a surgeon. I suggest also sitting her in behind reception and see what it's like on the front line as both nurses and vets sometimes have to step in occasionally to help out. It'll get her used to seeing what would be classed as an emergency over what can wait a day or two as well as seeing how drugs are dispensed and how to engage with clients in general.

Good luck!

RE: Work experience help

Thanks for the suggestions Ladies!

RE: Work experience help

You could show them some lab work and I have gone through with them in the past filling in hospital sheets for wildlife that come in :) Hope this helps.

RE: Work experience help

Research! Sit them down with some dusty tomes and ask them to research a condition (cushings, diabetes, cruciate, etc) they may have just seen in surgery / consults and then get them to come tell you all about it the following day (in a nice relaxed situation like when you're both sitting topping up the needles or something) Especially good if they were asking questions about the case at the time. Just make sure you do a quick bit of refresher reading on it yourself, haha!

RE: Work experience help

Have you covered some of the basic stuff as well - its not just cleaning and practice hygiene but its just as important, ie the importance of stock control and rotating stock, filing etc - I try to balance 1 interesting with 1 not so interesting (but equally important). Handling is a good one to tackle if you have some friendly practice animals.
