I'm due to take my ethics exam in 3 weeks. EEK!
The exam has changed a little from previous as we now get to know our scenario before going into the exam
I'm just unsure as to how to answer things about law, regulation, interpreting COPC

RE: Ethics exam

http://www.rcvs.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/code-of-professional-conduct-for-veterinary-nurses/supporting-guidance/delegation-to-veterinary-nurses/

J

Haha have fun?! Thanks i guess ;)

!Stupid Question alert!

(my exam is tomorrow... kill me.)

- anyway, can nurses give triple combo GA? I know we can't administer propoflo but my question mentions - the vs instructs the rvn to castrate the cats under triple combo GA

< this doesn't state her actually administering it but if she was to, is she allowed?!

Thanks for all of your previous help guys!!

RE: Ethics exam

Some great tips there from folks!

I love Bernard Rollin's book, Introduction to Veterinary Medical Ethics - if you can get your hands on it. Lots of really interesting (and difficult!) scenarios and discussion of the various features and arguments within them. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0813803993/ref=asc_df_081380399311695167?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=0813803993

In terms of CoPC there's a few areas you could look at - honesty, integrity, animal welfare, informed consent, responsibilities etc.

Another argument within this case could also be 'should the VS be reported for delegating a task outside of the law?' It is not only our responsibility to act within the code and the law, but also to protect the profession by highlighting those that may not be acting with integrity.

Regarding ethical viewpoints - this is a great site: http://ae.imcode.com/servlet/StartDoc

Good luck and have fun!

Just to add (and be slightly pedantic!), please don't use 'he' for vet and 'she' for nurse unless that is specified in the scenario, as if I were the marker it would irritate! (PS not criticising OP, as you haven't done that in your post, but is something that can inadvertently be done!)

Who is wrong in this scenario? Or is it both of them?

If you need to include ethics as well as law in this answer then you should be able to look at the situation from varying perspectives. What would a utilitarianism approach say? Etc.

RE: Ethics exam

ok well look at your scenario and all the things that are relevant to your ethics exam. The vet has DELEGATED a duty to the nurse. Look at delegation, has this been performed properly? The vet has a duty of care to the client, the patient and his staff...is he performing this duty of care in his actions? Look at the nurse...she is qualified and as such should know from COPC that this is not work she should be undertaking and she is by law accountable for her own actions. An RVN is legally allowed to administer a calculated anaesthetic dose so the triple is fine but incremental anaesthetic is not i.e propofol induction. So the outcome was fine, but, if it wasn't who would be accountable? Hope this helps!
