I worked with a vet for 3 weeks near Kruger and got very hands on. Their website is amazing and will tell you everything you need to know - great for experience with large wild animals and working abroad.

RE: organized vet nurse/student vn trips to Africa?

depends on what you want to do? from an animal care/husbandry side there are loads of projects available, you jus have to shop around to find a reasonably priced one you like.

if you want to practice while abroad you will have to be qualified, i don't know of any charities that take unqualified nurses for practical nursing abroad, you may be working with a very small team so it just isn't practical to have a student (i'm currently doing voluntary nursing in Malaysia, it would be an absolute nightmare here if we didn't have people with a decent amount of clinical nursing in all areas of veterinary practice)

globateer, vetsand wildlife, wvs, africanimpact all have animal and veterinary projects in Africa.

Do you want to work with wildlife or small animals? Africa will be like Asia in the respect that big cats etc will cost you a small fortune unless you can find the right contact, here if you want to work in direct contact with Orangutans you need to know someone. Also check how long of entry on arrival visa you can get for your chosen country, some countries charge a lot for volunteering visas and doing visa runs is not ideal, is hella dodgy and even though loads of people do it is actually illegal. rehab centres and the like will have volunteers coming and going all year.

Make sure you find out exactly what is included and what you have to pay for (we get accomodation, a car and a fuel allowance which is never enough, but have to pay for food etc which depending n where you go could be a big expense
