I have been studying for my cert vn ecc exam. I know we are allowed to write down in our cpd card for five hours undocumented study, but whilst doing my assignments etc I have probably achieved so much more than this. Am I allowed to write more

RE: Undocumented study- CPD.

There's a really good answer to this type of question from the RCVS in the letters section in a recent VT - sorry can't remember which one as I've recycled, but I think about 2-3 weeks ago.

I think the crux is that if you are performing study such as reading/writing presentations/assignments, then this isn't 'undocumented study', as you are producing something as a result of the study, so it is 'documented study'. I think undocumented only applies to, for example, just reading through VNT/VNJ, reading a few artciles, looking at websites - that type of thing - for which you are permitted 5 hours per year.

I recently attended an RCVS open day (which was an excellent insight into their work I should add) and I remember it being said that if you, for example, write a short reflective piece following reading a case, and add this to your VNPDR, (in the notes section), then this can count as 'documented' study.

Hopefully the RCVS will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I see it, and in fact the rules regarding what can count as CPD are more flexible than you may think. The key is that when you perform any reading etc; you write something down to show what you have learnt and to reflect on this - you will of course learn far more from it too :)

RE: Undocumented study- CPD.
You may choose to work towards a recognised qualification, such as the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or a university degree or postgraduate qualification. Working towards such a qualification will provide ample evidence of engagement in CPD activities. Use the online Professional Development Record (PDR) or CPD Card to make a summarised note of any courses you attend, secondment experience, and time spent putting together your assignments, and keep a separate file of further details, plans, learning diaries, attendance certificates and notes.
Looking at the RCVS website, it should be fine - can you keep track of how long your spending on a module or assignment and add it to your PDR/CPD card?

RE: Undocumented study- CPD.

if they award higher education credits (not sure if they do or not?) you can document 10 hours per credit awarded (i.e. 10 credits is 100 hours) I only know this after doing the DipAVN

RE: Undocumented study- CPD.

maximum of 5 hours total goes towards CPD record, as it would be too easy to say yes I've done 15 hrs of reading!
