Yes we are another that uses methadone! We use it for bitch spays ano orthopaedics.

we currently don't stock any of those , just vetergesic.

Having done orthopaedic nursing for 4years, I can say vetergesic is not enough. Methadone, fentanyl and morphine all the way. Partial opioid just doesn't cut the mustard in these cases. Pain score sheets are really helpful in these cases. Cryothetapy immediately post surgery also helps keep them comfortable and the swelling down.

We started using Metadone with ACP last year, took a while to get use to and had to find a dose that worked for us but makes a big difference in their pain relief especially after ortho ops (we have topped them up sc before they go home). Dechra have been realy supportive and their literture is good.

I attended the evening session on this a few weeks ago (Derek Flaherty) and it was excellent - there are many reasons for using methadone as a routine pre-med, and not many against.

There was a lot of really useful information from the talk that I'm sure Dechra cover in their L+L, so as others have suggested, I'd go to them and see what they can do for you.

Definitely a must to have this information given to all the clinical staff if you're going to use a new drug, as obviously you want to use it correctly and ensure you're aware of any of the issues. For example, prof Flaherty said the data sheet doses are way too high (but that's what they got the license for so it can't be changed), and there's issues with using it conncurrently with Buprenophine (as it will partially antagonise it) etc etc....

I'm having similar issues we do a lot of ortho ops and we use acp vet as a premed, then 6 hrs later we give another dose of veteregsic, and go home on tramadol but this doesn't seem enough, we have a new grad with us and she is shocked at our pain management. she is very pro methadone but my bosses are not.

yes i think it came from the rep after the l&l. Dechra are really useful and will gave you all the information you need and controlled drug register booklets to record the use.

Thanks guys that's really helpful , will definitely look into the lunch and learn, just feel vetergesic is not enough anymore, we have to fill the book in for ketamine so won't b a prob doing one for methadone too

I have seen a huge difference since using Methadone instead of Vetergesic- dogs appears much more comfortable and I find they winge/whine less. It is a bit of a pain logging it in the book each time but we've not had any issues with it so far :)

Hello,

We use methadone with medetomidine for our premeds. We find that during/after a procedure the patient is more comfortable and by giving it as a premed we're not caught out when we find an unexpected fractured tooth! Would highly recommend!
