/you don't say where in the uk you got 27K ... i can imagine that wage being in a large practice, or referral based position. Certainly not in a small 2 vet practice.
Ok to be fair I was in a practice just outside of London. However I still feel that nurses should be earning a wage that reflects our skills and im afraid I dont believe that wage does. Also the fact that you believe that nurses asking for higher wages is 'unrealistic' is what will keep the salaries so low. I dont know what stuff costs where you live but London is expensive and there are practices offering a salary of 18k to nurses in london. Which i maintain is outrageous. If my salary is not enough for me to live on (which 18k in or near london is not) i believe it is wrong.

RE: Wage of a deputy head nurse

One thing I would always say (and this has come on previous posts on this topic), it is imperative that you are offered a clear job description and what your roles and remit will be, BEFORE you start the position. This will give you a clear idea of what is expected of you, so that you can plan as to how you are going to acheive that, and ask for all the necessary tools that you may need - whether it be time, a computer, the correct authority etc. This will prevent all the frustrations that can occur when this step is omitted!

RE: Wage of a deputy head nurse

as the above has said. it seriously depends on the location v the cost of living, also practices try to get around overtime pay by giving you a set salary and stating its "average 37.5 a week. where as when as you look at time sheets your looking at 40+ hours.

RE: Wage of a deputy head nurse

I guess it really does depend on where u are in the country and what kind of practice you are in.

I knew of a few practices in the london area offering up to 30k. Even though i am not a head nurse i get significantly more than 18.5k. I would also say you have to be willing to ask for the right amount for you before accepting a job and if they are not able/wiliing and it is a deal breaker thank them for their time and consideration and move on to the next practice.
