Consider changing your doctor as doctors vary tremendously in how well they support clients with depression. My current doctor is lovely but I have ones in the past that are dismissive and just want to write out a prescription and get you out of the room as quick as possible.

I have tried various antidepressants and the side effects of several were awful (severe nausea) until I got used to the drug but I found 'feeling human' again worth it so it was a good trade-off for me in the medium-term. I have also found zylkene to be useful in the short term but too expensive to stay on for any length of time.

Re: Sinking.

[quote user="Princess Ophelia Hermione MacBeth"]

Hi,

Okay - I would contact the surgery to check. The Mental Health Team will probably be in contact to let you know if there are going to be any delays but the, in my experience, the initial assessment is done fairly quickly. If you find it hard to talk then it is worth taking along with you a diary of significant dates/feelings, etc as this will speed up assessment. They don't rush the assessments anyway - I got 2 45 mins appointments at weekly intervals - but it is in your interest to give as much info as you can and as quickly as you can (they won't refer you until they have a good idea of what's going on as there are various options and their idea of the most appropriate one will depend on what info you give them).

I wouldn't necessarily discount meds. They have helped me tremendously despite my reluctance to go on them and I know lots of others that have also benefited. They might help and they don't have to be permanent. I suppose I look at it as 'if I had back pain, I would take a nsaid....'. But its a decision for you and your doctor at the end of the day.

Is the CPN meeting with you for help or an assessment of need as this may affect how long you wait for treatment? Are you on any medication in the meantime Heather? Unfortunately the waiting list for psychotherapy, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, etc can be long so it might be worth looking for alternative sources in the meantime. Although private counselling is expensive there are organisations that offer reduced rates/means-tested for income so if you think that might help then it is worth looking to see what is available in your area. If you want I will look for you if you tell me where you are based/can travel to. If you want to chat to a friend then you can add me to the list of people on here you can chat to!

Believe me when I tell you you aren't alone - there are lots of us on here fighting depression, etc at the moment so we all need to support each other

Re: Sinking.

[quote user="heather mac"]
