I think (hope) today is the big day that we'll be doing the latest upgrade to vetnurse.co.uk, to add some of the things that I thought needed improving after the last (major) site upgrade:
1. JOBS We've done a lot of work here, and better integrated

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.
The thing that I liked searching for before was for Non Uk jobs.
Now there'll be a UK and separate world map view so you'll be able to see at a glance where the Non-UK jobs are (and where the UK ones are, at a glance).

Might be ready tomorrow ...

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

So ... we did another upgrade yesterday.

A few extra things added:

Jobs - we now feed jobs out to facebook, twitter and linkedin with the location in the headline. So headlines now read 'RVN needed in [location]', which should make things much easier for those who want to subscribe on those networks and get job alerts on their timelines.

We've also added start dates for locum jobs - but that isn't working yet. Hopefully we'll get that sorted on Monday.

Another thing that has been added is the ability to specify full or part time when advertising a job, We haven't got that quite finished yet.

Also added a page view counter so people who advertise jobs can see how many times they have been viewed.

We've also added the location to the job advertiser's management page, to make it easier to differentiate between different adverts when you have posted lots.

Forum - In each post, there's a button marked Options. Under this, there is a new feature called 'Tangent'. It's for when you want to take the discussion off-topic (off on a tangent). Press Tangent and it will start a new thread starting with quoted text from the post you clicked Tangent on. Just makes it easier to stay on-topic in a forum discussion.

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.
Hi Arlo,

My practice put up an advert today but when I search for a job I cant get it to come up. If I search just RVN I can find it and next to the advert in black it has London SE27, but if I search London it doesn't appear.

Should we drop the SE27 part even though other adverts come up with their postcodes?

Thanks
Hi Lee484

I've looked at this, and this is the issue:

When you do a geographical search from a large area (say: 'London') the system chooses a point in the centre of the area and then orders jobs by distance and recency, with priority given to distance from the centre of the place you are looking for the job.

So, how this affects your job advert:

If someone searches for SE27, or dulwich, or west norwood (for example) your job appears first or second.

If you filter for RVN jobs only, you're still on page one. If you search for RVN jobs in london, you're in about 8th place.

On the unfiltered list (ie on the job home page before applying any filters) there have been so many jobs posted today, that you are now on page two.

If someone searches for London, you're on page 3, as there are a number of jobs closer to central london than yours.

I don't advise changing your location to just 'London' because a) then people won't know whether the practice is, and b) anyone looking in Norwood / dulwich etc won't find you.

However, I shall prune the job list now - at the moment I am doing it every few days and we keep jobs online for approx two months.

In due course, I plan to introduce a small charge for job advertising, which I expect to reduce the number of job adverts and therefore give greater prominence to those that advertise.

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

Hi Arlo,

Anyway, we've got round all of that, and the system now seems to have settled down.

One thing - all jobs placed prior to the upgrade we given an arbitrary location of 'UK', which Google places just south of the border with Scotland. This screws up the search function until the old jobs have either been filtered out or expired.

I've spent a large part of the weekend updating individual jobs manually, and we now have about 300 out of 400 that are now fully compatible. To search them, put the postcode or town where you are looking. DO NOT select 'VN Qualified and listed' from the job title list - they are all old-style adverts marked as UK. Instead use 'RVN'.

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

Latest update ...

As I mentioned earlier, in the new jobs section we've reintroduced the ability to subscribe to email alerts of new job postings, and to get the latest jobs by RSS.

Now I've added 3 new external social media pages, which you can subscribe to get jobs posted to your accounts there (by clicking the links below and liking/following the page):

littlelowe Yes, I did play with this idea when we were developing, but wanted to try and keep things as simple as possible.
For those that are just mooching around, they can search by a broad area without having to be too specific.
You can still do that! Just type the area you want to search, perhaps your postcode or a county, and it will give you the list.
Perhaps volunteer could be in the contract type menu?
Well, it is quite easy for me to add categories in the job filters. But ...

Strictly speaking, the contract type is about the duration of the position (permanent / locum / contract), rather than whether it is paid or unpaid.

Also, I want to keep it simple (and not add loads of new categories that would mean everyone has to go through a long list first). So I wonder whether I should be thinking instead of adding an optional 'pay' field (Volunteer, followed by pay bands).

I didn't do that this time around, because I thought it fine for people to specify pay within the main body of the advert, which they enter themselves (or not, as the case may be).

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

I also liked looking at the non-uk section of jobs, just out of curiosity for what is available out there. Maybe it's possible to combine the drop down location menu of the old jobs into the new one? For those that are just mooching around, they can search by a broad area without having to be too specific.

Plus, some of the non-uk jobs were volunteer roles in sanctuaries etc. Perhaps volunteer could be in the contract type menu?

Just a couple of ideas. Not sure if they help really

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.
Hi Susber,

The first filter above the job listings allows you to filter by distance from a place. I think you'll find that if you put in your location, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link to the last page on the list, overseas jobs will appear there (as they will be furthest from your location).

You won't see any at the moment, though, as we haven't had an overseas jobs posted since upgrading to the new system.

I also have a plan that to add something else to make it easier to find overseas jobs, but that technique should work well enough for the time being.
AAARGH. Looks like I've spouted a load of rubbish there. Sorry.

I checked, and currently, the search results don't return anything that far away, so you don't see jobs overseas at the end of the list of jobs near your location.

At the moment, the only thing to do is search the country you are looking to visit (or skim read the unfiltered list, which now includes the address without having to click the link to the job advert itself).

I'm looking at how we might address this issue.

I've updated a few more, but just done a search for West Midlands to see what comes up, and there are some, If you don't see them, I need to investigate why (could just be that you're filtering using too many of the filters).

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

Hi Paige, yes that's right.
I am being a bit thick I think?

If I advertised that I was looking for locum work with my contact details these could end up shared on other social networks?
No, no, no!

The jobs section is ONLY for posting vacancies, It is not for posting situations wanted.

It is job vacancies that will be shared on other social networks, for example on Twitter, here: https://twitter.com/vet_nurse_jobs

I do have something I think you'll be very pleased to hear about concerning locums in the pipeline, but don't want to say too much about it now. But we're updating vetsurgeon.org onto the new platform next, and after that I'll be back with more news ...

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

I am being a bit thick I think?

Question for everyone about the new jobs section. It'd be really helpful to hear from anyone who advertises veterinary nursing vacancies, and from anyone who is looking for a job.

First thing is that because we get so many jobs posted on vetnurse, we've now added a really powerful filter to help you narrow them down to the ones that are of interest.

First you can enter your postcode to rearrange the list in order of nearest and newest jobs first.

Then you can filter by job title. Currently, I've added the following possible titles that you can advertise and search for:

Head Nurse
RVN
Veterinary Nursing Assistant
Student
Receptionist
Practice Manager
Other (manual entry, which then gets categorised as 'other'. Can include sales, teaching etc etc.)

My first question: Is this list good, or do you want any other categories to advertise or search for. Bear in mind that I want to keep the system as simple as possible, so don't want to create titles for jobs that are only rarely searched for or advertised.

One that occurred to me is Night Nurse. Would that be useful? Any others?

Then we have the following additional filters:

Hours: Full or Part Time
Practice Type: Small / Farm / Equine / Mixed / Other (academia or industry)
Contract Type: Permanent / Locum / Contract (eg maternity cover)

Again, do those look good?

Next question. We'll also be feeding these jobs out to external social networks, for job-seekers who want to get alerts fed to things like facebook, twitter and linkedin. So next question is apart from those three, are there any other social networks you'd like jobs fed through to? Anyone use Google Plus, or Tumblr?

You can also now subscribe to get email alerts of new jobs the moment they are posted, and have them delivered by RSS (if anyone uses RSS!)

One small thing to note. The jobs that were in the system before yesterday are not entirely compatible with the new filters. For example, they have been automatically categorised as UK. So the filters only work properly on the jobs posted since yesterday. This problem will obviously reduce as the old jobs expire and new ones are added over the next few weeks (I'm also going to email everyone and ask them to update their adverts.

Any other feedback about the jobs section much appreciated. I'm really pleased with what the techies have done, and hope you like it too.

Incidentally, now we've got such a powerful jobs section, I'm going to ask that people don't post adverts in the forums!

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

So, we're back up again, but various things not yet quite right with the new jobs section. Continuing to work on it, though you can continue to post jobs in the meantime. Just that they are not yet displaying on the main list, just the site home page.

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

Any time now ...

RE: VetNurse upgrade to jobs / forums / galleries etc.

Latest is that the site is likely to go down this afternoon.
