Hi - I've locumed for the past 3 years and really enjoy it. Gives you a great overview of the whole veterinary profession, seeing how different vets / clinics & hospitals / nurses operate, all the varying locations - it's a great way to see the UK. Or you can form a good relationship with all your local clinics as a local locum.

I've had work mainly through Liberty Star, A1 Locums, Carlton Professional, and Vet2Vet. Really great teams with all of those agencies.

Be aware that if the agency is an introductory agency only then you may have to chase the client for payment (I am dealing with that at the moment with a corporate, not impressed!). But if you are paid by the client through the agency then you will be paid weekly (as the agency then chases the client).

Hi,

I set up my own limited company to be paid through, it takes a little bit of time to do this, and there is cost involved. I also have an accountant who does my tax/NI etc etc, and have found this very efficient and avoids having to pay an umbrella company fee. However, umbrella companies are useful, and will sort everything for you, but be aware you have to pay them a fee.

Maybe talk to an accountant, and see what they would advise is best for you?

HI Dani,

The course is 100% online, and materials and discussions can be accessed at any time over the 2 week period. The 'coursework' is construction of really useful documents to help you with locuming - such as a 'practice induction list' - a list of areas you need to know about when you start at a new practice. There are 3 short lectures, one of them looking at the financial aspects. Just email me if you want to know more. Wil be another run as soon as we have another group together.

are you set up as a limited company or do you get paid via an umbrella company? I locum in my weeks off every fortnight and not sure which option is best as the thought of doing my own tax and ni scares me![quote user="laceylp1990"]

Hi!

I started locuming last year after many years of permanent work, and I must say I really enjoy it! Synergy Vets have been the best agency for me, although I'm registered with a few agencies.

It took me a long time to decide to take the leap - but I'm so glad I did :)

I'm in the same position been in my practice for 18months after freshly qualifying and starting to find a lot of problems with work. Have started looking for another job but confidence been knocked a bit in current practice so thinking about locuming to help build some confidence again and not get trapped in practice politics. This thread has already helped and further tips greatly appreciated.

Either Liberty Star or Pet Medic Recuriment, both really good at helping you find employment.

Every practice I have worked for always gives locums an induction period, it will mainly be practice protocols, systems and equipment you will need to learn. I say go for it, you will get lots of experience doing so, you will meet lots of people and places like Vets Now always need night staff. Having said that, have a good look round for permanent positions as well, we need more qualified nurses, they seem to be in short supply.
