As for abuse the human medical profession do it all the time. When my dad was in hospital the first time we got in and were told that he may not last the day. No one had bothered to notify us the best part was the follow on throw away comment..

"As you know he is do not rescussitate"

No we did not know that they had decided it. Some moral officer at the hospital. Never heard of this person but belive me the c**t wealds power. Yes l do use harsh words because of the way it was done.We found out in a terrible way. We agreed to it my mum because she thought my dad would go fast that day and had convinced herself he would die. I agreed because l knew what it would do in fact the recus act would probably kill him.

it was a hell of a shock to be told that. We have never told my dad, but it is on his record and only he can order it's removal. However l know that rescusitateion would kill him it is not like tv but very brutal.

He takes the path in life that god will look after him and puts his trust in that, he also says while he is alive he will do as much as he can to live.
So do l keep this secret and in a way betray him or do l tell him and then try to explain what recus would do to him and likely kill him.
Bearing in mind to him if someone wants to kill themselves fine but he would never contemplate it. However how would he even begin to ask them to remove it with all the present health problems and the mental state of my mother. The fact he is 91 gets confused, is deaf with very limited hearing and a mirriad of health problems.

My mum thinks that all is ok in fact she has probably forgotton about it and thought it was just while he was in last time. I just live with the quiet hell that my silence may well kill my father. And the "medical profession" are the ones to thank.

Re: human euthanasia

*deleted*

Re: human euthanasia

My family and myself had to watch my uncle basically starve to death thru oesophageal cancer! towards the end he become very gaunt, and lost considerable weight. They tried a stent but was unsuccessful and therefore I feel euthasnasia is an acceptable form of 'treatment' for the terminally ill. I have already decided that I would have DNR put on my notes if I become terminally ill.

Re: human euthanasia

I agree that I would wish it as an option if I were ever unfortunate enough to be either in long term pain with a terminal illness or my ultimate fear which is to be totally paralysed and totally reliant on others (I'm sure I would go demented as I have such a low boredom threshold already!) However, I do think it could very easily be open to abuse by "carers" who simply found the going too hard or couldn't afford other options of care/nursing etc so whether it will ever become legal, I don't know. I agree that certainly any veterinary colleagues I've had the same conversation with seem to be more in favour, just because we are used to having the option on a daily basis with animals who are suffering and are used to seeing them have the option of a dignified ending rather than just wasting away.
