I was wondering if there are any locum nurses out there who are working under agencies and umbrella groups. I have been told that I cannot really increase my hourly rate now unless I become a Limited Company. At first I thought this was because I

RE: Locum nurse rates

Hi Jill,

Alisons response is excellent, i am a recruitment consultant for Recruit4Vets and specialise in veterinary nurse recruitment. Using an umbrella company should not limit the pay you get! For my nurses i always aim to get you paid as much as possible and as Alison mentioned other factors such as travel should also be taken into consideration.

If you would like more information or for me to help you find work please do not hesitate to contact me on 01423 701321 or via email.

RE: Locum nurse rates

Jill message sent

RE: Locum nurse rates

Thank you x

RE: Locum nurse rates

Hi Ali,

I base my locum rates on distance to travel and the work required; as previous poster mentioned, additional qualifications and OOH or referral work can attract a premium.

I work through an agency and also my own sourcing. No umbrella company. I do my own taxes etc. I am self-employed as a sole trader.

Generally anything from £10-£15 per hour (higher rates for longer travelling distances - those over 30 minutes and up to a max of 60 mins). It really depends on the practice, their budget, their needs and if you are getting work through your own sourcing or through an agency referral.

My locum agency will always try to get the best rate for me (anywhere from £10 p/hr upwards in my pocket, as they take a cut). If I am offering work through my own sources then I can usually attract a higher hourly rate as there are no agency 'cuts' to consider, so £13-£15 per hour. If the practice doesn't have to pay agency fees then they can be more flexible with how much they pay me. Some practices won't hire if you are not referred through an agency.

I work in the North/West Yorkshire region. I should expect a London/Southern based nurse may be able to ask for more?

Hope this helps.

i am 7 years qualified, with extra certificates and have some great experiences and recommendations from previous vets and locum agencies, so I have been able to ask for a little more.

most vets have a wages budget, so won't pay very high, unless they are desperate for cover. However if you work on call, nights etc... You are within your right to ask for higher.
