We had a similar problem, needing staff first and last thing, so implemented the 10hour days to combat this and increase continuity. I worked my Rota on two early starts so 830 and then two lates 9/10 start. I work 9-6 as head nurse. The nurses are on a kennel/theatre/float rotation and work 8hr days as our busiest times are first and last thing So that&#39;s when I need more nurses. This works well for us :). However the on call nurse does a split shift 8-1.30 then 5-7.30. They will all do one week day on call, they take it in turns to do the Friday then whoever is on call sat/sun they have the Tuesday off.
