At my practice we've been taking on a lot of school work experience students, however, because we are quite a small, quiet practice I really struggle to find tasks for students to do & things to keep them occupied & interested.

i'm sorry if this comes across a little blunt. but we all need to support everyone.

We have a student in every week from june soon so this is an interesting post to follow.

I'm thinking of making up a daily chart of tasks to do that can be used each week. The only thing I've noticed in previous years is that a cleaning job I think should take half hour can take them 10 minutes, which means it isn't done properly. Then if I tell them I expect them to take half hour they do it really slowly but still not properly done!

[/quote]

could always try what I do - ie ask them if they would like to mop or hoover - if they hoover I follow them round with the mop afterwards, but ask them loads of questions to keep them interested. I prefer it when they ask to mop I must admit, because then if they are inclined to leave the waiting room like the shallow end of the local pool at least you can say stuff like -'can be a bit tricky that mop but I find if you wring it out tighter you only have to go over the floor once and it saves you a bit of time' they generally catch on pretty quick and if you show you are interested in them and are willing to spend a bit of time with them doing the same stuff they know they aren't been given all the crap jobs. Admittedly there are are still a few where I breathe a sigh of relief on their last day and a very few where I have to wonder how they have managed to live so long!

RE: Work Experience

weve stopped having work ex students as we just are not busy enough between 11-3 and they get so bored or get in the way lol! also one of our vets refuses to have them in their room... which makes it rather akward! i previous practice we dd a work book/diary for them to complete every day.

RE: Work Experience

We have a student in every week from june soon so this is an interesting post to follow.
