Just wondered if anyone is using this regularly in practice and how effective you feel it is, also
what training was involved and where did you buy the equipment?

Thanks in advance

RE: Laser Therapy

I've seen a video of a dog I'm helping in Taiwan using it post spinal-op. They didn't operate for the first 9 days apparently because of Chinese New Year (?). He lies there and his little legs react! It's amazing to see.

RE: Laser Therapy

Thank you all for the positive feedback, I will do some research and hopefully get one organised soon!

RE: Laser Therapy

We use one at the zoo on all sorts of mammals, birds and reptiles! Primarily for wound healing but we're starting to use it more for lameness etc and it does seem to help. I guess with anything like this its hard to know what would have happened if you hadn't used the laser, as you always throw everything you can at them, so there's always NSAIDS, wound gels/honey/antibiosis, etc etc being used concurrently but we have had some excellent results with chronic wounds which have had the same longterm regime and finally healed once the laser was introduced.

Omega supplied our laser and training, and have been fantastic with follow up support but as with anything the various companies will snipe about who has the better piece of kit but do a bit of googling and see what is about.

RE: Laser Therapy

Hi

Never used one myself, but have had physiotherapist use one on all three of my dogs for pain relief for various issues on a number of occasions, and I think it really helps.

RE: Laser Therapy

My practice has started using one. We have a k-laser and received training from the company. We are using it on surgical wounds as well as chronic conditions. It's rearly easy to use. I can't comment yet on whether or not it's effective as I don't feel that I've had enough experience with it.

RE: Laser Therapy

we also use laser therapy at our hospital, it's an interesting bit of kit. The company trained us one morning and showed us how to use it on one of our arthritis patients. Its a good substitute for a cat or dog who cant take NSAID's due to renal probs etc. We've also used it post op, for othopaedics, non surgical wounds, trauma, any sort of inflammation and we've had a lot of positive responses from the owners.

The company advised us it can be used on almost anything to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, promote wound healing etc the only thing it cant be used on is anything with neoplastic cells (encourages blood flow so I guess causes tumours to grow quicker?)

Its super easy to do, the majority of our patients are given the laser therapy by a nurse, its good bonding time with the client, its not invasive for the dog/cat and its slightly warm so quite nice for the patient, they just get to sit and cuddle their parents, none the wiser for the treatment!

hope this helps!

we have recently got a laser machine and it has been brilliant. We use it on wounds, dermatitis cases, arthritis, post surgical (we do orthopaedics). The results have been all positive so far and the clients seem to like it too

we had training for a morning from the company we bought the machine from (I can't remember off top o my head what they are called!)

RE: Laser Therapy

Hey Sian,

I used this abroad a couple of times. When I spoke to the vets in the practice about it they said it was great for wound healing in particular. They said in regards to a patient with a huge open wound, that they had seen a lot of progress and they thought wound healing was accelerated compared to if they had just left it to heal on its own. I believe there are also other uses of laser therapy such as a form of physiotherapy and pain relief, although I'm not too familiar with these uses.

I think the company who provides the equipment (not sure who that was) give a training day at the practice.

Sorry I can't be much more help!
