Hi. I have seen alot of adverts for '2nd year' trainees or 'we will consider 2nd years'. I was wondering if it is normal to begin training at one place for a year then switch to another, is this not frowned upon? I can see the benefits to the nurse

RE: Switching practice during training

It's not as uncommon as you think, especially when you consider there are a lot of full-time student vet nurse students who work as unpaid work placements in a practice. Not every student is an employed student.

RE: Switching practice during training
some SVN's (placements - no wages paid) are let go by the practice after their first year (12 months) because the practice then has to pay apprenticeship wages (around £2.73 per hour I think...). So, it can be nothing to do with SVN choice!
yes this is quite common practice for some places - free labour for the first year and no expense for the second because the trainees that do last that long (and lets face it the drop out rate is pretty fantastic) only have at best a 12 month contract.
On the other hand, I know some practices actively prefer to hire 2nd year SVN's as they are naturally more rounded in their competences and do not require as much 'from the ground up' training which is viewed as more time costly.
this one is starting to get more popular now as a lot of practices have cottoned onto the 2nd years - they have survived the 1st year and are less likely to drop out, and on the whole they are quite useful as long as you dont hang onto them too long and they qualify because then they will start to cost you serious money

its sad but this is what happens these days in many places.

RE: Switching practice during training

check your contract as you may have to pay back any fees in evolved, we don't pay college fees only exam and registration fees, if we paid this would be written into the contract that all fees are paid back in full.

RE: Switching practice during training

Hi,

I changed practice for my final year, and qualified no problems. The practice who paid for your first year might not be happy though so don't be surprised by angry management! Also, check your contract because it might be written in there that you have to pay your fees back if you leave within a certain timeframe. This is something the practice you move to for your second year might consider paying off for you if they really want you. No harm in asking if they would be willing to do that.

Good luck, I hope this helps!
