I'm based in the south east and (hopefully) qualifying next year so would like to know how much I should be looking at when I am offered

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

Thanks for the reply Rach,

That really does help. I'll definitely keep that all in mind when applying for jobs. I'm excited but apprehensive at the same time!

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

It's mostly dependant on the type of practice you work for and the job role that you do. I think nurses under estimate their worth. Those that get paid more have been brave and asked for more. What do you think your worth is more the question? What do you bring to the team. It's not about how qualified you are it's about your skill set. Most practices small ones will pay less but that's because often your half way between a receptionist and a nurse. Three teir practices will pay more as will those that offer I house night service. Referral practices will pay higher still so you need to look at what type of nursing us for you. The surveys I don't believe take this into account there is such a difference dependant on the practice and the job role so I would stick one salary on it. Hope that helps.

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

Hi Sal,

Thanks for your reply.

I had an idea that the surveys were not going to give me a definitive answer hence my coming on here!

I haven't actually been offered a job at my practice, it's my own assumption based on a few things other members of staff have said to me but I just want to be prepared for when/if it happens!

The conversation I had about wages was with the practice manager and another member of staff and was completely informal. I just said that I had no idea how much a newly qualified nurse earns and they told me that there (and in the surrounding area) I would be paid minimum wage which I just find quite hard to believe.

Thank you for your advice; I'll definitely take a look at my living costs and see what I can afford to be paid. Myself and my other half are hoping to save some money so would be nice to see what others have been offered/ paid in similar situations/locations.

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

I used to carefully fill in those surveys and once upon a time I did take notice of what they said - and then you find that the reality can be so much different that you can end up with legions of pissed off nurses because they aren't getting what the survey said they should - take the survey results (any survey results) with a pinch of salt. Wages vary from place to place and indeed person to person even within the same practice depending on their value to the practice.

I have given up even looking at these surveys now - they just tend to make people miserable (or give employers a ceiling for the wages) What I usually do is work out what I can afford to live on and if employer offers in excess of that then its good . You could always ask the practice if there will be a wage review once you qualify. Could it be that the minimum wage they are offering is just until you qualify?

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

Hi Emma,

Thanks for your reply. That's the survey I've already looked at/ mentioned. I'm very confused because the survey strata that (of the people who replied to the survey) rvns working for less than 1 year were paid a minimum of £8.86 or thereabouts which requires to roughly £17000 which I would be happy with however that's £4000 more than my placement have said I can expect! I don't know which to believe... The survey is obviously truthful however not all nurses fill in the survey and return it so I don't know if it is a true reflection of the vet nursing salary and I don't know if my placement are just trying to set me up for a low wage that they are going to offer me once qualified.

RE: Newly qualified RVN salary

There is another post on the site with a link to the BVNA salary survey.
