An external hard drive is plugged into a USB port and you are able to carry it arround with you. also means all documents can be backed up on to it in case things go wrong with your current PC.

I do full back up on a regular basis of all data. l have loads of discs l do not care would rather have my data. As to your laptop ask one of the computer shops if they can take your data off they could probably swop the HD into a seperate machine to do your backups or even fix the keyboard.

On the same sort of subject, I have a load of photos on my old lap top which were not backed up to anything. The lap top is now broken
The keyboard doesnt work and when it does it just replicates numbers/ letters loads of times. Basically we cant log in!
Does anyone know if there os anyway to get the photos off the computer?
Got loafs of my godson when he was teeny on there and really dont want to lose them.

Moral of the story- back up!!!

I have all my pics on CD, if i had them on memory stick i would worry that they might be lost, i feel happier with CDs!

Get a memory stick.Discs are just as easy but i always fear they will get scratched, so a stick is better in my mind

I have loads on there, I also have loads of files,,,,,,,,, basically everything I would need if my computer crashed. Its not hard and you dont need a majorly huge stck. i think mine is a 2 mB or a GB or a KB......... hell who knows all i know is there is enough spcae to sore all my needs and more and it was only hmmmmmmmmmmm, cant rememeber, not more than a tenner anyway.......

I have two sets of backups, one onto a 2nd hard disk on the PC (so volatile things like documents,spreadsheets), and also newly added things (like photos, of which I have stacks and stacks) have a 2nd copy on a separate disk. This protects against disk crashes but also means stuff is online for easy access.
Then the current copy is backed up onto an external drive (I paid about £75 for a 500gb disk) and this disk is (usually) not stored in the house, so that if the house burnt down and the computer along with it, I have a complete month or so old copy which wouldn't be harmed and could be used for rebuilding. This backup external drive also has dated copies and will do so until nearly full, and then the oldest ones will be deleted, so this protects against corrupted files which happened a few months back and so older data could be restored.

But then I was an computer techincal analyst in my "former life"..

And please everyone - if you never back up - if there's only one thing you do this week - get a copy of your most important data - you may thank me later.
It's like insurance, you hope you never need it, but you can bet you do the day before you get around to arranging it!!!

aw thanks!! Busy shopping after I texted you back. So disheartened when I went shopping though - the clothes I liked looked hideous when I tried them on may save the details for a pm though!
