Surely there can't be many who would disagree that a nurse who holds a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or similar should command a higher salary than a nurse who doesn't? After all, it shows that the person has sought to increase their professional knowledge and skill set, and if that's not the making of a good nurse then what is? No, a person with such qualifications isn't ALWAYS going to be a 'better' nurse, but it surely helps to give prospective employers the measure of that person.

RE: how precious

James, I appreciate that, I honestly do, and I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I believe nurses should be recognised for the work they do, not the title they hold, (be it listed, registered etc.) Extra qualifications do not always equal better nurses in my opinion.

RE: how precious

Steph is correct and if you read the wording above from Julie Dugmore this confirms RVN will stay

RE: how precious

I heard it direct out of the mouths of the RCVS themselves today.
Seriously, would like to know what you're thinking!

I mean, strikes me as not a huge deal if those with qualifications get to have them displayed (at this point I'll duck down into my trench).

I mean, the uproar amongst vets happened when the College said it was going to remove post-nominals. In this case they're talking about adding them!

Still, when I talked about adding them to the registration on this site, the feedback was that it would be divisive and I do wonder whether this will be seen in a similar light...
'It is proposed that only qualifications at level four or above, worth 60 UK credits, should be accepted onto the register, a move VERY likely to anger vocationally trained veterinary nurses and trigger another petition and conflict!'

quoted from the article for those that missed it. From the article it would appear that somebody has twigged in advance its going to cause problems - but hey we will do it anyway. This discussion is not about making a BSc better than an RVN. Most RVNs top up out with the BSc scheme.

it is offering the chance for the many post qual qualifications to be RCVS recognised. As some on here have mentioned they have these quals. I do too. I did them for mine and the patients benefit. But it would be nice for the RCVS to acknowledge there are institutes and nurses willing to go above and beyond the current recognised quals.

I personally actually have more letters after my name now than is in it....I'm a DipAVN (small Animal), DipHECVN, ISFM CertFN, RVN. I am a vocationally trained nurse I have never been to university BUT I have worked damn hard for those letters, and I am currently working towards more (all whilst still in full time work plus a 2nd job). I know that the RCVS will not include the CertFN or the next qual that I am working towards looking at their criteria I may be lucky that they include the DipHECVN.

To be honest the amount of extra work that goes into the 2 1/2 years for the DipAVN I honestly think that we are worth that extra couple of thousand a year that we may get offered....and even prior to me completing it I didn't begrudge dipAVNs getting that as it is extra work.

I honestly don't know about the BSc or FDSc and those who qualified this route getting offered more money. But I can agree that there are good AND bad nurses who have trained either way.

So in a nutshell I'm not really bothered what the RCVS decdes to do re this as it will only effect those who have a degree or not....which in recruitment you would see on the CV anyway and if clients look they prob wouldn't know the difference either

Already I've seen plenty of job adverts that offer at least a couple extra thousand per year to DipAVN's.

When I started nursing I was at a stage in my life where going back to full time education just wasn't feasible. I worked hard for my qualification (as we all did) and now I'm starting to feel a bit penalised for not going to university.

I've dealt heavily in the recruitment side of my practice in the last couple years, and can honestly say I have seen no difference in skill level regarding how the nurse was trained - if anything, it has only confirmed to me, that in this job, there is a lot a classroom can not teach.

RE: how precious
words fail me...
