I claimed mine back just last month and they are allowing me just £12 per year! but have backdated it for the maximum 4 years. I can feel another phone call coming on. I had to ring them last month because my new Tax Code said I had no personal allowance and would be taxed at the higher rate

I think somebody had got a bit over enthusiastic somewhere when putting in 0's - even the chap at the tax office asked if I was very friendly with the boss to have got such a wage rise - £146k for a part time VN! sure would be nice but no - I earn less than 1/10th of that

RE: Locum expenses
. Uniforms, work clothing and tools

You may be able to claim tax relief on the cost of:

buying, repairing or replacing small tools you need to do your job, eg scissors or an electric drill

cleaning, repairing or replacing specialist clothing, eg a uniform or safety boots

You can’t claim relief on the initial cost of buying work clothing.

If you need to buy other equipment to use in your job, you can claim capital allowances instead.
Yep, but when you look into what qualifies as a uniform/specialist clothing, it gets more problematic.

***AMENDED*** It looks like HMRC will allow non-branded uniforms now as tax deductible. I was originally stopped by HMRC back in 2000 for claiming the costs of VN uniforms! ***

What you can claim

You can either claim:

for what you’ve spent - you’ll need to keep receipts

a ‘flat rate deduction’

Flat rate deductions are set amounts that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has agreed are typically spent each year by employees in different occupations.

If your occupation isn’t listed, you may still be able to claim a standard annual amount of £60 in tax relief.

You don’t need to keep records of what you’ve paid for if you claim a flat rate deduction.

RE: Locum expenses
hat's interesting re uniform - not heard that one as I would say if you have to buy your own uniform then that would count as an expense.
Unfortunately not, not unless it is branded/logo'd to your business so that it could realistically only be worn to work. The rationale is that you could otherwise choose to wear the clothing for non-work purposes so it isn't a legitimate expense. I guess that is because, irrespective of the job we do, we have to wear clothes - employed, self-employed or other.

RE: Locum expenses

There is going to be a massive change to expenses if you are with an umbrella company in the new tax year so best check it out now.

RE: Locum expenses

That's interesting re uniform - not heard that one as I would say if you have to buy your own uniform then that would count as an expense.

It can be a tad confusing, and also depending on whether you are self-employed or working under an umbrella company (a topic in itself!)

If you need a bit of guidance before you set out, we run a 2-week module on Locum Nursing - only £49 (which can of course be offset against tax as CPD as somone has mentioned :))

More details here or email me if you're interested.

As for uniform, I was told I could only claim for PPI which doesn't cover your actual uniform. I could claim for CPD (including travel to and from, hotel and meal costs is away from home) after I had someone send them an email stating that I NEED to do CPD to enable me to continue working as an RVN.

Travel costs can be claimed for every time you travel to and from work. Also the umbrella company I used ad an option for invoicing the client for expenses so if they say they're covering certain costs then you check that option.

RE: Locum expenses

You will need to take this on a case by case basis and it is something you detail with each employer. Some may consider that the higher locum rate than a paid staff rate is because these on-costs are met by you.

But you need to be specific about them and not assume they are going to be covered. If they are not covered by the employer or the agency then basically they are yours to pay.

If you are paying them yourself then they are tax exempt of course so you can offset them aside from your income and then just get taxed on what is profit.... but you need to be careful that you don’t accidentally try to claim them as tax exempt if an employer has paid them (easily done in a rush when trundling through receipts).

I split my invoices into two distinct pages, a professional time page and an on-cost page to make it easier to divide up my costs, and I have a receipts and tickets stash for travel costs, and I print a hard copy of everything including a mileage log and file it all in there for each job.
