As a boss, vet and practice manager I have spent a lot of time trying to build the right vet team. I have read a lot your posts and spoken at length to many nurses and locums about the pay and conditions in the

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

oh what a shame, north wales is such a beautiful part of the country but I think that's why we struggle. Mind you I moved from bucks to north wales for a vet job 10 yrs ago and havnt looked back since. The quality of life and valve for money is so much better xx

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

Brilliant!
I thought by putting new and rapidly expanding practice that nurses would know these are new positions and that we are just growing. Would it be worth putting existing staff testominals on here so people know we have a happy team?

We are definitely family friendly and would support and actively encourage any cpd , we have spent £ 1000s in the last 2yrs on improving our staff including receptionists and groomers.

I would never dream of putting likes cakes as my locum nurse would kill me as belittles nurses. Could you imaging putting that on a vet advert.

Any other feedback gratefully received, we go into the vet times next week so here hoping

Really, is that all we're worth? A cake on a Friday??? Totally turns me off, I won't even read the ad.

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

Great to see this post :)

if I was looking for work I want to know salary - is it worth applying for? Is there a scale I can work my way up? What are the hours and are these flexible or are management open to negotiation? Seeing a position that pays for CPD and actively encourages nurses to develop and take on areas of interest is vital.

I also hate ads that mention cake and biscuits!

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

salary dependent on experience or negotiable is a no go for me. Just be honest and say what is on offer, not what might be on offer at some time in the distant future. One of the corporates offered me the same rate as their receptionist and at the time I had 24yrs experience including referral and HN and was 2/3rds the way through the medical diploma.

Too much emphasis on how friendly or happy the staff are also sets the alarm bells ringing - esp if I have seen the same vacancy advertised a few times throughout the year. Thats not to say practices don't have happy and friendly staff though - lots of them do

I like the 'traditional values' bit in the ad it would appeal to me if I was jobhunting (but bear in mind nurse wise I am classed as a bit of an old fogie and I might not be the sort of person you were aiming the ad at or the sort of person you would hope to employ?)

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

[quote user="FINNIGAN"]I hate seeing an add that's says 'ample supply of biscuits' or ' plenty of chocolate on offer'.
agreed - an ad like that may just as well say must work for peanuts - because thats generally what they equate to

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

I won't even read adverts that start with "vet nurse/receptionist" or "RVN or experienced nurse" or ones that don't have the location in the title (that also annoys me on the job page on this site - mostly you have to open each advert to see exactly where it is - we're not all nomadic singletons!). It worries me when it says "must have GSOH" or just gives a link to a webpage with no other details than "we are recruiting". I like adverts that say what the current staffing levels are, ratio of QVN to SVN, description of caseload, "cpd paid" rather than "cpd encouraged". Never seen it, but an advert that said flexible family friendly hours would instantly get my attention, and those that are part time (which doesn't include the 3x12 hour shifts per week ones!). Practices that advertise regularly send warning bells unless it says "due to travelling/parenthood/promotion" etc. Oh, and if the practice is run by husband and wife team, I won't apply - played piggy in the middle once too often!

Or am I just being picky?!

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

I hate seeing an add that's says 'ample supply of biscuits' or ' plenty of chocolate on offer'. Working all day all weekend just doesn't work with me! I understand with the job we're in that long hours are expected but I think this needs managed with a good, well managed team.

Wage is also a deciding factor and as NickyVN said - a team that works well together is a must. It's hard enough working in a vet practice without having to deal with other peoples drama!

RE: THE NURSING JOB YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

Obviously state the wage.
