thats why I said at the outset it was too late for me - but as I was asked I responded. Pleased to hear things might be different now but as I am no longer a member of the BVNA - partly because of this I can only comment on past experience

very strange - because it was the BVNA I sought advice from after being pointed in their direction by my college tutor, and the advice I was given at that time was incorrect (I later consulted a solicitor). I am not making this up - I was definitely given advice from the BVNA ,so who was providing the advice for the BVNA at that time? Pleased to hear this has now changed.

that has also been my experience that is why I always advise CAB as the first port of call

I had a similar problem last year and I went through ACAS who were really helpful.

I agree with everything above too, I had to sign something to say I wouldnt tell anyone the outcome.

Such a horrible thing to go through, you have my sympathies. I, like you, hadnt done anything wrong, other than take the job in the first place, lol!

Unfortunately in law if you are classed as an employee it depends on your length of service and you have no right to go to tribunal if you have been working for under 2years (unless you are claiming discrimination on grounds of gender, disability, race, etc). This means the employment tribunal route would not be open to you unless its a claim for discrimination or you have been employed for more than 2 years. It used to be a 6 month period but this was increased to 2 years by our current government. This does mean employers can get rid of people for any reason they choose and there is no right to redundancy or tribunal except as above.

You may have a civil claim if your contract with the employer specifies payment in lieu of notice but this would need to be taken forward through the civil courts (by sueing) rather than the tribunal system and is a separate issue. You'd need to think of this as regards being a contractor rather than an employee. The BVNA helpline may be able to help, or if the matter is not too complex then CAB or a law centre can too - or sometimes private solicitors can offer a free consult. It may be that a solicitor can follow up this consult with writing a letter to the practice for you (which they may charge for).

If you joined the BVNA they would still be able to help with this even though it happened after you became a member. I had a similar situation and they were really helpful!! Definitely worth considering. Good luck!!

im not via an agency. it was a long term position i found for myself and was paid via my umbrella company who invoiced the vets direct

Was also going to say about the BVNA legal helpline - very helpful. I would think you were entitled to pay in lieu of notice, and make sure they pay you any accrued holiday that you have earned. The good news is, there are lots of locum roles available, but that probably doesn't soften the blow of being treated like this. Breathers any senior staff that will write you references? Good luck and hopefully a better role will turn up with bosses that treat you well x

are you employed through an agency or not? - if through an agency it may be worth taking this up with them?

The CAB may be able to give you some advice on this or at least point you in the right direction
