I've not been in my new job very long (couple of months) - and I've just been to the doctors and I'm being referred for counselling as my depression has returned, as a result of a lot of life changes and uncertainties atm.
Is it difficult isn't it - you want to be honest but don't want to be seen as a 'weaker' member of staff. Just remember - depression is an illness just like any other, so you shouldn't be treated any differently. It sounds as though it's something that's actually worrying you in itself (ie having to take the time off) so just for this reason it may be worth having a confidential chat with your new manager - it may take the weight off your mind.

You could try speaking to someone at Vetlife first - here's their website - http://www.vetlife.org.uk/ - there's a number you can call or you can even email anonymously - they will have seen many similar situations so may be able to advise with the backup of more experience.

All the best,

Jill

I don't have any details of the counsellor or the sessions yet. I will obviously ask for them to be around work. It was more I thought I needed to give work a heads up really. Thank you all x

RE: New job & a new problem...

is there any flexibilty with session times? ie is there any way your counsellor will fit in sessions around your work? I always tried to accomodate the client as much as I could because as I saw it they were going through enough (or they wouldnt be there) without having to worry about time off as well. Might be worth asking - it might be possible?

RE: New job & a new problem...

I'm sure all will be fine, hope all works out ok ,,

RE: New job & a new problem...

Hi

Thanks both. I do have to say something as I'm gonna need time off for counselling sessions sometimes. I was just hoping

that they didn't view me negatively for it. I am doing my job fine atm. I'm just not as confident as I once.

RE: New job & a new problem...

I think if it's not affecting ur work then I would keep quiet,, but maybe if there is someone at work u can trust and talk to then sometimes a supporting hand is a comfort,

RE: New job & a new problem...

Hi,

I am in a similar boat, although it is an autoimmune condition I have. I need time of to see Cardiologist and internal medicine consultants a my local hospital. I considered at first taking days holiday to cover my appointments, as i didn't want anyone to think i wasn't able to do my job. I decided to speak to my boss(we don't have a practice manager) and everyone has been very supportive. I know depression is a different thing, but if you are still carrying your job out to a high standard and it isn't reducing the quality of your work and of course you are managing your work load fine then I do not see why it would be a black mark against your name and why there would be and issue you needing some time off for counselling sessions. You could even offer to make the time up another day to balance it out?

I hope this helps
