If you go to the RCVS code of professional conduct for vns guidance note 18 this will provide you with guidance on this.

Hopefully you find this helpful

Hello,

I currently have 2 first year students who began their training in September (one of which still does not have access to the online student log NPL). My boss would like then to begin giving 2nd and 3rd vaccines but I'm unsure where we stand with regards to this.

I always thought that whenever a student was giving an injection they had to be supervised but this means they will be giving injections unsupervised.

if anyone has any information or anything I can go back to my boss with this would be great.

thanks

[/quote]

so who would be signing the vaccination record? and who is taking responsibility for your students in the unlikely event anything goes wrong?

RE: student VNs and vaccinations

I started my nurse training in September and still have not received my anything back from the RCVS officially stating that i am enrolled as a student nurse and that i can do any schedule 3 acts, which means that legally i cannot give any injections even under supervision. (i think 3 months is a very long time for them to just process some forms but i am still waiting!!!) So are they enrolled with the RCVS yet? And if not then they cannot do this.

RE: student VNs and vaccinations

Hi

which course are they doing is it the one with Central Skills or is it the RCVS Course? I had to wait a while before I had access to my online log, if they speak to their college/course provider I'm sure they will be able to sort something out.

And with regards to the vaccines - None of the student do these, but I guess it depends on the practice and their polices. A few of the RVN's will do second Vacs but its the vets that should do this really.

I hope this helps :)

My students would also always be supervised to make sure vacc reconstituted and given correctly. Also if clients have any queries do they have the knowledge to answer correctly?
