Just wondering those that have got into teaching would you suggest doing a cert ed or PTTLLS? I have been in touch with The College of Animal Welfare for experience and Mark Hedberg (hi) but I am keen to know how other people have

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

PTLLS and Cert Ed are 2 different teaching courses.

ptlls is a modular starting course that will lead you on to ctlls then DTLLS to get your level 5 teaching qualification. It can be done quickly in 1 year via distance learning.

cert Ed is a 2 year level 6 attendance course.

Both qualify you you to teach in further education.

I got in to VN teaching 3 years ago, I completed the 1st year of my PGCE (over here the 1st year is a qualification known as the Certificate in teaching - I'm in N.I.) and have taken a break before hopefully completing next year.

Teaching is really demanding, you never stop!! I got in to teaching through sheer luck I guess, I was a bit fed up in practice and noticed a job ad for a VN Instructor, I applied, got it and havent looked back. They have put me through my teaching qualifications as I've been doing the job so it's worked out well. I love to see the students qualify, it makes it all so worthwhile.

Good luck!

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

I love a challenge!! Lol.. I know it's hard work from lecturers iv been in touch with but I very much want to give it a shot. Gaining as much experience as possible will hopefully put me in good stead! Iv had an in site into schemes of work and lesson plans too. I'm definately willing to put the time and effort in :)

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

James Colver Cert. It's not that teaching is a bad deal; it's just that non-accredited training (short courses, my end of the pool) are a bit simpler than the accredited diploma training that require PTLLS and certificates. There is a pretty big turnover in FE and HE training, because there are people who decide that it's probably a nice little lark to do 9 to 5, talk to students about the vet profession for about an hour, and then tea and biscuits for everyone.

When in fact it's a lot harder than that - there's a lot of pre- and post-class preparation. Not saying you can't cope, it's just more work than EVERYONE thinks it is.

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

Lol james colver just noticed your comment on if I decide to stick around.. are you teaching?Surely it's not that bad!!

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

Thanks for taking time to reply peeps.. thinking about the pttlls after my cert ECC vn :)

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

I did PTLLS and found it a good introduction to teaching. I did it via evening class.

Cert Ed is very expensive now but you can apply for funding. There are other courses you could consider - the Level 4 Certificate in Education for example or CTLLS as it used to be called. This covers some of the information covered on PTLLS as a Level 3 introduction then moves on to cover much more at Level 4. On completion you do a bridging unit then can do the 2nd year of Cert Ed.

Good luck. :)

RE: Teacher training for RVN's-Cert Ed/PTLLS?

James Colver Cert.
