Just a word of warning! Etholyne glycole is also in screenwash!!!!! I always keep mine in the boot of my car outta the reach of mischief batfink!

Yea, it's a pity so many cats appear to be illiterate, otherwise those labels would really come in handy.

Honestly... how hard is it to put a bittering agent in the antifreeze?! I don't know alot about how anitfreeze is made, but I'm pretty sure it would take alot less effort than the amount of effort it probably took to think up that ridiculous excuse for a response. Do they really have to wait for a small child to get poisoned by this stuff before they do what's necessary?!

lol pm me them then...lol I am trying to think the only time I was on TV was at a ice hokey match in the early 90's and Wimbledon 2 years ago........ but my cousin has been a few films and musicals...... well known ones too

Thanks Alex - echoing STRN's answer really but there are plenty people on here which feel strongly about this subject, so anything we can do - just ask!

I'm Alex Campbell - manager of the VPIS.

We signed this petition too - and I was notified of the response yesterday as well. I entirely agree with your sentiments. It is generally accepted that the fatal dose of ethylene glycol in cats is about 1.5ml /kg of pure ethylene gluycol - so only about 5ml can kill your average cat. Even if diluted as intended the fatal dose in a cat would be about 20ml. And woth cats you have to act fast as they succumb very quickly. If they've started to go into renal failure, which they can do within the hour, prognosis is very poor.

About 73% of the cases in cats referred to us end in fatality. Its a sad fact that many of these are malicious and there have been spates of poisonings localised in certain gerographic areas in the last year or so. This is the trouble with press campaigns about such poisons as it gives people ideas often.

VPIS will continue, perhaps with collaborators such as FAB, to try and highlight the problems to the appropraite authorities and manufacturers and see if we cannot lobby them to change the formulations.

I'll keep the forum updated on developments.

Maybe they would see it differently if they lost one of their pets in this way (god forbid, i wouldn't want anymore animals to suffer)?

I am raging at this, and got an e mail about it after signing and gettin lots of other people to sign it........., I have lost 3 cats to antifreeze poisoning, and they were not bloody accidental, they were deliberate, so what good is it going to do for the likes of me, or for that matter do they think that the people who deliberately poison animals will give a flying *** about the contents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes me sooooooooo angry

We lost a number of cats over last Winter, from suspected antifeeze poisoning including 3 cats from one household.

We doubted that any of these were cases of deliberate poisoning as the incidents coincided with warnings of a cold snap, which always prompts people to drain and re fill their tanks , no doubt spilling the horrible stuff on the ground .Then ,along comes the curious cat and their fate is sealed..........

I doubt that the average person would be aware that cats seem to find anti freeze so tasty as cats are portrayed as being so fastidious with their eating habits and preferences.

Losing cats to anti freeze poisoning is heartbreaking , perhaps those people who continue to ignore the need to change its formulation should talk to those owners who have lost their pets in this cruel and horrible way.

perhaps we need to pass it to all those MP's whose dogs have won Westminster Dog of the Year awards and ask them how they'd feel if their dog or cat died a horrible death from it?

But of course if the government expects our animals to read then we as individuals are failing in not teaching them what these labels mean! I think one of the RSPCA Five Freedoms is "Freedom to be able to understand danger notices". Back to school for my pets!
