You can just use a stuffed toy and place the tube with a bag on the end to collect the liquid? My students have bought toy cats for £1 from charity shops. They have usually ended up with NO tube and a uri ary catheter!

I am. Clinical coach as well and my student was allowed to Simulate for competency. We used the OSCE as a guideline but then added questions at the end to show they understand. fI

It sounds like the college are getting confused with the poor writing of the task. It is EITHER placement OR management. Therefore as said above you can simulate management usin the OSCE task as a guide.

Hi.

You can simulate this task as others have said hovever - be careful how you write it out! Make sure that when signing off competency you write a clear description of how the student simulated the task, what they did and note questions you asked then, like 'how did you check patency etc'.

I had conflicting advice from 2 different IV's but a good simulation with back up evidence is more than sufficient.
Professional discussions are now technically not valid as the NPL is a 'practical log' and a simple discussion with notes doesn't show that a student is competent in a practical sense.

Im a CC & my students are allowed to simulate this task. I rang the company that does Halti's & asked them to send me a dog halti head & I fitted a naso tube. So long as the student correctly administered the feed & spoke about checking the tube is in position, they said this is fine.

What about simulation with a professional discussion. Sure i have done this before, guidance seems to vary between vnacs.

I have checked with them, I can't claim competence with a simulation as you can't check if it's in the correct position therefore the nurse cannot be competent at that skill :(

I would check with your college, we allow our students to simulate this skill using a mannakin and the OSCE metholology for additional practice if they are struggling for real cases.
