The time has come for me to replace my old Litmann Classic ii SE stethoscope. Im a RVN in small animal practice. The dual head on my Classic stethoscope ceased up within a year or so of buying it and so ive only ever used the larger side

Re: Help with Stethoscopes please.

Thank you Stuart you've been very helpful! I really really really want the Cardio3 but...... The only things putting me off are that as you say it is a bit more bulky than the Master Classic and also, the replacement parts are very pricey compared to the Master Classic, I know they wont need replacing very often but it is something to consider. I dont know what to do! I want something that is going to last and it sounds like the Cardio3 is definately better quality. We dont have any monitoring equipment in our theatre, and so i do find myself quietly fiddling about under the surgical drapes on a regular basis to try and get my stethoscope underneath without disturbing the vet! so maybe the Cardio3 would be a disadvantage size wise in theare? The more i research the more i keep changing my mind!!!

Re: Help with Stethoscopes please.

Also depends on how much you have to spend - the radio 3 is quite a bit more expensive....

Re: Help with Stethoscopes please.

Hi Claire,

I do find the cardiology 3 better for small patients with the smaller size - you can change the small side to a bell as well as the tuneable diaphragm if you wanted to but i like the diaphragm on both sides. The cardiology 3 is defiantly heavier that than the master classic and if you hang it round your neck like i do most of the time i do it doesn't sit quite as nicely as the tubing is dual lumen instead of the single lumen of the master classic and not quite so bendy - but i think this helps to improve the sound quality. I think the biggest advantage of the cardiology 3 over the master classic is the sound quality and the two head sizes so good for all patient sizes - especially for spitting lung fields down to 6x6 instead of 4x4 in smallies. The main advantage of the master classic is its lighter and the heads less bulky... I was able to pick up a heart murmur last week with my cardiology 3 which i couldn't hear with my master classic.... was low grade but still there's an example of the difference.
Hope this helps?

Thank you for your reply. I'm just looking at the cardiology 3 now and I am very tempted! I like that the smaller side has the option of not having an open bell unlike my current classic 2 se. It does look lighter than the master classicwhich maybe helpful during cat anaesthetics. Do you think I would be better off getting this one instead? Or should I stick with the Master Classic if it is a good all rounder? I'm guessing the cardio3 with its smaller side is better for cats? Is the master classic better for medium to large dogs? We don't have many small furries here, just cats and dogs mainly. I will be working with a cardiologist soon and so want to make the right decision and have the right scope! Being the owner of a cardio3 what do you think? Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks again

Easy to replace the diaphragm too if it goes.

Re: Help with Stethoscopes please.

Hi,

I have had a litmann Master Classi 2 for about 15 years now - on its 3rd set of tubes and used everyday! really like it and its heavyer than some other the others but certaily solid. Have also recently just bout a cardiology 3 as it has the smaller size - must say the smaller size is very helpful for the smaller patients and the sound quality is defianlty better then the Master Classic 2. but quite expensive at round £140 ish. I would not hesitat to get a master classic 2.
Stu

Re: Help with Stethoscopes please.

[quote user="Nick Shackleton"]http://www.vet-direct.com/default.php?sid=VD-3351-2107-6037&sessiontag=prodfullview&data=9454
This is the one I use for work. Reasonable price. Good name lightweight. Mu work in emergency centre so always doing checks on inpatients and during triarrging new admittaances. Available In different colours

I use the same one, very comfortable is indeed lightweight. I've had mine for about a couple of years or close to and had no problems with it.
