I'm starting a new job in less than a month in a hospital practice and I've never worked in one before. I made the move so I could learn how to do more nursing and procedures as I've only been qualified 2.5 years and have never seen or dealt

RE: New Job

Hi,

Thank you all. I've been here 3 weeks now and I think it's been ok. I've seen some interesting patients to say the least. I'm still getting to grips with things. I still don't know a lot but I have investigated things like drugs/equipment etc to help me along. I feel like such a newbie haha.

I found it helpful to carry around a small, pocket sized spiral notebook in my pocket so I could write down things like drugs I was unfamiliar with, terms I wanted to understand better, etc. This was invaluable to me. I could study in depth at my leisure. These little palm sized spiral notebooks are really inexpensive too! Just think, a year from now you'll look back and wonder what all the anxiety was about! Go for it!

Re: New Job

You'll be fine my dear! I also worry about this sort of thing. Perhaps if there is anything really juicy or different in, you could let me know!
As the others have said, ask lots of questions and don't be shy if your unsure/need reassurance - I always like the phrase "a silly question is an easy answer" makes me feel better when I'm having one of those days!

Re: New Job

I completely get where you're coming from as I've been there myself. I moved from Ireland to Canada and completely stressed myself out because everything was different and I only worked in a tiny practice before moving but as long as you are willing to learn you will be amazed at how quick you pick things up!

You will be so happy you took this chance and the job satisfaction you'll have from all the new skills you learn will be the bonus! My biggest piece of advice is don't be afraid to ask for help or tell them you don't know how to do something, I struggled with this because I was afraid of looking like I didn't know anything but as my confidence grew I realised I did know a lot and you will too :)

Best of luck and congrats!

P.S I am qualified I just don't know how to change my username!! :)

Re: New Job

Hi I fully understand how nervous you will be , I qualified from a small animal based vets 6 years ago and about 3 months after qualifying I went for a referral nursing position for the experience of interviews not expecting to get the position due to being recently qualified.

As you probably can tell I got the job , all i can say is ask questions , you can't go wrong and shows that you are interested in learning and plus they got to understand that this is all new to you.

Good luck and enjoy it.

Re: New Job

Ahhh haha.
Just be happy, smile and ask lots of questions! Its normal to feel a bit apprehensive! I do, even after having been qualified since 1996! lol
