I think it's going to depend on your situation, I would always recommend pet plan but I only have one dog and don't mind paying a higher premium for the level of full cover I get but that wouldn't be appropriate for Princess Ophelia to pay a higher premium for 7 dogs (I know I couldn't afford it) so she has found an insurance cover that works for her! Just make sure whichever you go for you read the small print!

Sal we have the same problem with Tesco! We have posted, emailed and faxed claims with the attached full history.....and get a call or email from them saying they never received the history and dragging it out even longer.

I am another for petplan.

I would always use Petplan. I have had insurance with them with mutiple dogs over 15 years, and have been very unlucky with most of my pets, so have always claimed huge amounts of money.. A claim in August totalled over £4000, and I find that the premiums only go up by a £1 a year. I had one dog insured with more then against my better judgement and in the first year his prenium doubled, and I had claimed very little.. but then couldn't change as he was quite elderly, but dreaded his renewal every year knowing it would be huge... I never have this worry with Petplan, and it is worth paying the higher prenium intially knowing its not going to rise hugely during ths dogs lifetime.

a few issues with Tesco at the moment (not me personally but 2 separate clients) - one of them has had a full history with claim form sent at the beginning of sept. Another request for the history again at the end of sept because apparently they hadnt received it (I faxed the whole lot myself this time to the number they provided us with) the client has now had yet another request for a history to be sent and is getting peed off.

2nd client claim form and history sent in August - then they get another request for last 18mths clinical history, which I would happily supply except the dog in question is less than a year old. Again client getting peed off

I have Tesco accident and injury only policies for my 7 dogs (4 over the age of 8) @ 6.25 per dog. I then pay my vet £100 a month, in advance of anything going wrong, to put my account as far in the black as possible before anything goes wrong. This works for me as, in my experience, most problems with my dogs are caused by injuries and accidents. However, I would be unlikely to opt for referral level medicine for anything medical/surgical so I am happy with the limitation. I also made sure that I didn't register with a practice that used a separate OOH service in order to keep my potential costs down further.

I'm with MoreThan because I felt PetPlan were ridiculously expensive for my 3 year old crossbreed! They seemed to be offering all the same things as PetPlan but half the price, I love PetPlan but even with the discount it wasn't the right price for me!

I don't know if it's the designer crosses which are driving the price up? They've always been ok when I've been doing insurance in practice but I'm not so sure about the premium after you've claimed...

I'm with pet plan. I know they are expensive but in my experience personally and processing claims in practice they are always excellent. My friend is with more than her premium has doubled since her dog turned 8. She also has to pay 10% so if you think about it if your dog goes to vet school and the bill is £700 you would need to pay £700 up front. Being a vet nurse I know I would struggle for that kind of money!

I have my dog with Pet Plan and would insure any future pets with them as well. My dog is only 2 and a half but we have already claimed £7500 worth of treatment, my renewal has just started and was just over a quid more expensive each month then last year! They didn't query any of our claims, and because i have a lifelong policy i know as long as i don't let the policy lapse they will cover any future treatment my dog needs related to what she has already had done (which is certain to be the case). I can't personally comment on any other insurers as have never used them but i know from friends and clients at work that some are nothing but problematic, they may have cheap monthly premiums but when you read the small print they exclude a lot of things and will try everyway possible to avoid paying your claim!

My dogs premium is about £31a month at the moment but even if that went up to £50 a month over 10 years that is still less then what they have already paid out in claims in her first 2 years!

i had my old dog insured with More than, and although the policy was excellent, when i made a claim they put my premium up by almost double! All my current insured pets are with Pet plan and my dog and one of my cats have had numerous claims and my premiums didn't go up at all this year.

Petplan, for all 3 of my cats. The oldest is 17, has had multiple claims over the years for blocked bladder, abscess, elbow arthritis and now heart failure, they pay up each time without any fuss, staff and multi pet discount and although his excess is now £115 plus 20% i have had more than my premiums (£19 a month) out of them over the years. I know they can be more expensive than most for dog insurance but i would not use anyone else.

PetPlan. I claimed over £6k over 3 years with my previous dogs and it went up by about £1 a month. I wouldn't use anyone else.

Mine is with pet plan and not gone up much. Think it goes up more when they are older. Bear in mind pet plan do dental treatment and behavioural which a lot dont and also be very careful you dont go with anyone that premium loads if you claim. I find they are by far the best for not quibbling over claims.
