just to clarify - apparently they are obligated to ask every caller if they are feeling suicidal :(

i have felt that way, way in the past when i was but a young whippersnappper - i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...

if you are struggling to cope with the whole situation, i would recommend giving them a call - they will be able to point you in the right direction to help your sister

Wishing you and your sister all the best

I would give the charity 'Mind' a call and have a chat with them. They will be able to give you lots of useful advice. Their number is: 0845 766 0163. You can also ring NHSdirect and ask to speak with a mental health nurse for advice. They will call you back if there is no one free at the time. If you find that you could really do with somebody to chat to (and don't feel that you can talk to friends about your sister) then it is worth calling the Samaritans. They are not just for depressed/suicidal people but can provide a friendly impartial ear and sometimes it helps to talk to somebody 'outside of the family' as mental health problems can/do take their toll on the rest of the family too. They are not there to give advice though but sometimes just talking helps!

Your mum is probably already familiar with this given that your sister is currently being seen as a day patient but it is worth getting hold of the OOHs mental health team contacts in advance incase your sister needs/wants an emergency psychiatric mental assessment. I don't know what the arrangement is where your sister is but here in Edinburgh we have a seperate mental health hospital and people that are having/likely to have mental health problems can call the unit direct (bypassing A&E and our equivalent of NHSDirect) to speak with a psychiatric nurse OOHs (i.e. without having to give the telephonist details, etc first) if they have the relevant contact details. It is worth finding out what the situation is where your sister is based.

The best thing you can do is just ensure that your sister knows you love her and support her. Don't try saying that you 'understand' as you cannot possibly and this is likely to get her more upset. She may say/do some hurtful things - try not to take it personally, avoid arguing with her and make sure you you & your mum make some space for yourselves as dealing with a family member who has mental health problems can be emotionally and physically draining for all concerned. One of the things about anxiety and post-traumatic stress type conditions is that they often lower a person's self-esteem quite considerably so be prepared for this. I would chat to the professionals for guidance on the condition and how to handle people that suffer/suffered from it.

Goodluck and I hope your sister recovers soon.

Re: Adjustment disorder any help please..

Johan.

Well as you know Ive had a fair amount of experience of depression and anxiety, its not alot of fun. Its not easy when you are that far away from your sister either.

Have never heard of adjustment disorder I have to say.

Glad your sister is getting help and getting out of the house.
