Hi everyone,

We are having a Practice Standards inspection at one of the practices which I work for on Monday, so I've been interested to read all the relevant threads on here about this. Just wondered if anyone else has had an inspection more recently, and if so, what the inspectors focused on? Is there anything they are especially 'hot' on at the moment? Not that I've time to do much about it now?!!

Sounds like it all went ok Dippy. Glad that there were no awkward questions - been worried about what we might get asked! I guess the inspection is not about trying to catch us out though. Well, fingers crossed for us tomorrow & I'll let you know how we get on.

It seemed to go quite well (although you're never 100% sure obviously) but feedback was good and only a few very minor things needed sorting, mainly to do with h&s and not becuase the practice doesn't have procedures/protocols for these, but just to do with legal requirements for the paperwork relating to them (layout incorrect etc - red tape stuff!) Made some nice comments to pm I believe and only stayed for about 3.5hrs. Didn't really speak to any staff other than coutesies (no awkward questions) and was all pretty harmless. I'm sure it probably varies depending who your inspector is and which tier you are going for but we're all fairly unscathed!

Our inspection was last autumn and the inspector only wanted to see my CPD card and asked about a couple of protocols but it was mainly the boss who he dealt with. It wasn't as bad as was expected, he was only there about an hour.

We had one in December. I sent ages preparing all the paperwork against the checklist, this is the bulk of the visit. We got asked a few questions eg asked trainee where accident book was kept etc but mainly spoke to boss. We did really well and only had to move our bookshelf to more accessible position, and more the safe to better position - paperwork all in order which I was delighted about!

However don't expect to get your stuff through quickly - RCVS are very slow.

They might want to speak to staff to make sure any written protocols are followed and understood - especially dispensing ones.

Out of interest - has anyone who's been inspected recently (or anyone who is already in the PSS) not had a dental scaler in practice, say for example, orthopedic places or referral places who don't do many dentals??

We had ours in feb and as expected we were all very nervous. The inspector was very nice and she asked a few questions to the nurses, mine was to demostrate how to sharpen a dental elevator, something me and the boss had discussed about 2 weeks before. As long as the paperwork is correct, you'll pass although the boss informed me the day before no-one passes on the first attempt... he was made to eat his words when we did!!!!

Thanks for the replies. We have all the paperwork and everything is in order. I just wasn't sure on a personal level whether he would be likely to start asking us for explanations of what we are doing and why on his way round or whether he'd just ask the boss and PM who will be doing the rounds with him. As the only RVN in the practice, I wondered whether he would ask how much supervision the trainees get in theatre, dispensing etc - all the usual things which get discussed on here, or whether it's more the actual premises and facilities he's inspecting.

hi dippy, i assume it is a PSS inspection. if so there are guidelines available on what they will be looking for (your boss will have them). the inspection usually consists of a walkround, to check what equipment you have, that the relevant SOPs, local rules and health and safety posters are visable. they often like to see an op underway. also make sure the practice is spotless, as this is something they will pick up on.

a large part of the inspection will be paperwork, health and safety etc, your boss will likely be dealing with this.

yes they may speak to nurses, usually the person showing them around (unless you boss does it his/her self)

don't worry about it, most of it is just checking that everything is as it should be, for the patients and staff.
